"Name and Shame a Moron"

Have y'all seen the Sun?  image

Basically they're showing a bunch of pictures of the faces of rioters and asking for the public to name them. Are other papers doing this too?  Do you think that it will be effective?

Re: "Name and Shame a Moron"

  • I think this (and the similar fb pages) will be their best be in terms of identifying people. Using traditional means of discovering identity will take a long time and probably have minimal success, but media/social media will put these faces out widely. In some cases I feel like people may not be likely to come forward, but so many people are outraged by the way they have been terrorized, I think if you saw your neighbor, coworker, whatever, you'd want them punished and turn them in.

  • I think it is a great idea!I read something a while back about a teen riot or robbery and they played the video in the media and some of the parents were turning in their kids after seeing them in the news. It might not work for all of them, but I bet some ppl will be called out because of it!
  • Agree with PPs.  It seems like a great idea and I hope it helps with identification.

  • I really hope it is.  There's got to be people out there who know who these morons are that will be willing to turn them in.
  • They have some groups on facebook and the Met Police also have a site.  I like it and hope that people will do it.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • I am all for this but how is just having a picture of them going to convict them?  Isn't that just evidence they were there but not that they necessarily stole anything???

London's covered by CCTV.  I'd imagine that the video surrounding the still photos would be enough for something along the lines of disturbing the peace or disorderly conduct, vandalism, destruction of property, etc.  I'd imagine that once someone is identified more charges could be added if they had more evidence.

  • They do something similar to this in Chennai, India (where DH is from).  The city police have a FB page for people to ID traffic offenders; here's a story on it:

  • I would turn someone in if I knew them.

  • They did this after the Vancouver riots. I think it's a great idea.
