I miss back-to-school shopping

When we were little, we used to go on a big trip and buy tons of outfits and then have a "fashion show" for my grandma.  Then she'd buy us more stuff.  Then we'd go to Sam's Club and get all our school supplies.

I could REALLY use a shopping spree like that right about now.

Anyone else have back-to-school shopping memories?

Re: I miss back-to-school shopping

  • I used to love shopping for school supplies and setting up my little binders and Trapper Keeper.

On a side note, I miss summer camp.

  • I agree and the excitement of wearing your "best" outfit on the first day of school - even if it was courdoroys and the temp was 93.

I tend to still buy one very "fallish" outfit in August and/or boots, I can't help myself.

  •  Me, my Mom and my Nana used to go shopping for new clothes for school every year around this time. I def miss that time with them, We would always go somewhere for fun shopping. My Nana loved outlets, so we would go to the Outer Banks and go shopping, or to Rehoboth, PA, Williamsburg, etc. It was much more than back to school shopping.

I did take advantage of VA's tax free shopping last weekend and got some stuff at the Leesburg outlets.

  • I miss back to school shopping too. For the clothes (and ditto PP on wearing the best outfit on the first day) but because I'm a nerd, I also loved shopping for school supplies and setting up my binders/notebooks and labeling everything, and getting it all ready to go in my backpack. Such a dork.

I miss summer camp too.  :(

My sister and I went to the same camp for 2 weeks every year for 7 years and we still talk about it.

My mom was recently in the grocery store and saw a girl with a t-shirt from my summer camp and scared the crap out of the poor girl by yelling, "OMG!  RimRock!" The girls mom and the girl just stared at her for a second until she got a grip and explained that we'd gone there for years and even though we're now grown and married and such we STILL talk about it.

  • I agree with the part about wearing your best fall outfit on the first day even if it was 90 degrees out. I miss school shopping. I confess I was pretty spoiled in that regard. Being an only child coupled with divorced parents who were always trying to compensate for splitting = getting a ton of cool new outfits.

    No Shiit?  that's awesome!

I always expected to meet a fellow Rim Rock camper when I moved to this area since it was all DC metro girls, but it's not really the kind of thing that comes up in conversation very often.

We always went for the first two weeks of August.  What about you?

Also...I was just looking at the website for sheer nostalgia and they got a pottery studio!  I'm so jealous.  I'd have loved to have done pottery instead of the relatively lame crafts we did get to do.  (I always felt like the arts and crafts pavilion was the redheaded step child of the camp.  They built a new stage and a new barn during my tenure there - but the arts and crafts was all sad and hidden up on the side of the hill with crappy supplies)

  • I miss shopping for school supplies.  It was always fun picking out new supplies and getting all of my binders organized and ready to go for the first day.

  • I loved back to school shopping! We didn't have a ton of money and most of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my cousins, but I always did get a few new items for fall. Of course, I made sure to wear those new things on the very first day no matter the weather!

I too loved getting new folders, binders (the year I was allowed to get a real Trapper Keeper was monumental!) and getting all organized.

I also get so nostalgic this time of year when I go to Bed, Bath and Beyond and seeing all these young (when did I get old??) kids shopping with their parents to head off to school. I remember being so excited to go away to college, getting all the dorm essentials, etc. I love life now but the idea of being back in a dorm, with no responsibility except making it to class and a PT job sounds wonderful some days!

  • I used to love getting the list of required school supplies at the end of the summer. I found myself in the school supply aisle at the grocery store the other day and I stood there thinking "okay what can I buy?" I LOVE school/office supplies!!!! I should really have some kind of secretarial job - something that uses all this stuff, Haha.

  • I totally stocked DD up on crayons when they were on sale at Target for .65 for the 24 pack!  I wanted to get them for .25 a pack @ Office Depot but they were sold out!

Since I wore a uniform to school we always did my fall clothing shopping after school was back in, and then my mom would try to clean up w/ just buying stuff on sale.

I know that most retailers definitely advertise for back-to-school shopping, but the year I worked retail (3.5 yrs ago when I was pregnant w/ DD) the owner of the store I worked in said that the national trend was that people weren't doing the huge clothing back-to-school purchases they once did.

(ETA) - the reasoning is partially because of all of the "fast fashion" H&M, Forever21, etc. type stores, since those stores can turn around and knock off a trend super quick, a lot of people don't spend their entire clothing budget for a season months in advance.
