poll: tiny joys

I loved this article in the Post from yesterday about life's tiny joys (getting the last serving of curry from the food truck, cute puppies, nice weather) in face of the debt crisis.

So, what tiny joys have you experienced lately? I guess this a little like Thankful Thursday, but with a theme :-)

I'll go first:

  1. We found a little community garden down the street from us. It's tiny (maybe 10x10) but this woman started up thinking she could teenagers involved and out of trouble. Well, they weren't interested, but that means we get to reap the benefits! She gave us a bunch of tomatoes last week and said we could come by any time and pick more stuff.
  2. DS let me cut his nails this morning without a single freak out. Just sat in my lap like a . . . big kid.
  3. Beauty and the Beast is on right now while I'm teleworking! So I'm watching and, of course, singing along.

Re: poll: tiny joys

  • 1. I think I may be done pumping. This is a HUGE joy for me, but maybe it counts as a tiny joy in the grand scheme of the world. :)

    2. M's daycare is closed for 2 days in August for teacher training, and I think we're going to do an impromptu getaway to somewhere with cooler weather.

    3. I have coffee.

  • 1. LO pooped before I left this morning, but because I was wearing a white shirt, DH changed him. (just being honest--this is a mommy's tiny joy).

    2.  I didn't have to pack a lunch today because I'm getting lunch at an event.

    3. I ate chocolate yesterday and a butter cookie the day before and I haven't noticed any difference in LO. His dairy sensitivity might be coming to an end....

  • 1. I pooped! For those that remember my post in yesterday's DOTD you know this is no "tiny" joy.

    2. Q-Tips - seriously the best invention ever. NOTHING feels better than cleaning out soggy ears with a nice fat Q-Tip.

    3. I have a new coffee travel mug that I find quite snazzy.

  • 1. I went to see Wicked (which was wonderful) and decided to buy the soundtrack. I now listen to it every time I get into the car and it makes me so happy on my commute. I never knew I'd be the type of person blasting Broadway showtunes in the car.

    2. I just bought a Brannock device to measure the kid's feet at home so I no longer have to go to the mall for shoes. I'm not sure why this makes me so happy but it does.

    3. I figured out how to make Frappucinos at home so I can have one every single morning without having to give $5 to Starbucks.

  • 1. My intern is not only funny and pleasant but exceedingly competent. This is actually a big joy.I don't want him to leave.

    2.  I finally calibrated my home monitor and the world looks the way it should.

    3. I've had three different kinds of bubbly since Saturday. And it's only Wednesday.

    4. C happily ate roasted okra last night and asked for more.

  • 1. Our housekeeper came yesterday so I came home to a clean house. I felt instantly relaxed knowing that I didn't need to clean before going on a girls weekend this weekend.

    2. A working escalator at the Smithsonian Metro station (Independence Ave exit) this morning.

  • Court - I think I'm jealous about the nail clipping! :P

    1. Our daycare provider just gave me a flash drive with old pics of DD.  I teared up a little bit ago seeing how much she and the other kids have grown over the past year.

    2. Anyone notice the sun is coming up just a little later?  I'm happy that I'm no longer waking up at 5:45 because it's so bright out.

    3. This is the second week of three in a row where I have plans to meet up with girlfriends.  I'm excited to have a social life :)

  • I have a DR appointment this week and everyone, friends and family can finally ask how I'm doing and I'll have an answer.  I skipped going for the past two months because it was summer and I just didnt feel like getting poked for blood tests

The school year is about to start and even though I wanted to change schools I'm fine with going back to my old one.  It'll be my 5th year there and since I teach grades pre k-5 I'll know most of the kids

  • I just ate the most delicious peach and it has put me in a better mood.

DD woke me up this morning by kissing me on the forehead and telling me I 'need to go to work.'

It really is the little things sometimes :-)

  • 1. DH & i have a date at zaytinya on sunday night! we have been dying to go and with our busy weekends over the past month, we're also overdue for a proper date.

    2. this time next week i'll be at my grandma's for almost two weeks (which isn't great money-wise but it will be nice to have more than a few days with her)

    3. having my bff's five year old give bff & i make-overs was hysterical. we looked ridiculous but she loved every minute of piling eyeshadow, blush, and bright pink lip gloss on us.

    4. and there isn't a day that i'm not grateful for coffee

  • 1. Sprout voluntarily let me snuggle him this morning.  Since becoming mobile he's been less inclined to be cuddled, so every moment like this is to be cherished!

    2. I just bought some UnderArmour shirts and they are basically amazing.  They dry so fast that most of the time you can't tell I'm dripping wet at work and they come in cute colors.  Oh, and they are suuuuuuuupppper soft.

    3. I've got some tomatoes roasting in the oven.  The house smells so good.  Tomato season is the best!

  • 1.  DH and I curled up and watched a movie when he got home last night.  I'm exhausted this morning, but it was a nice night.

    2.  The raspberry sorbet I had yesterday afternoon after walking the dogs.  YUM.

    3.  My boss and I have separate offices now.  It's so nice.

  • 1. DS slept a little later this morning and most mornings this week. He doesn't hear us getting ready in the morning since we just moved into a bigger place. I got to enjoy my coffee and read the newspaper a little longer...

    2. DH and I found a sitter and are going to Harry Potter this weekend, although we're headed to Ballston (it was the only place the times worked with our schedule) and I'm a little terrified of cockroaches.

    3. DS has rediscovered his toys since we have a baby gate set up in the basement now! Previously all he wanted to do was climb up the stairs.

  • 1. I met my BFF's new boyfriend this weekend. After many years and many guys, I think this guy's "the one" and I'm so happy for her.

    2. I threw DD's stinky Diaper Champ in the trash. Three weeks out of diapers and I'm calling her potty trained so see ya, Diaper Champ!

    3. Matthew Sweet is playing at the Birchmere in October and it's the 10th anniversary of the date I met DH, so we're getting tickets and a sitter for the night!

  • 1.  I came home from vacation to find in the mail that I made my Q2 bonus even though I was positive that there was no way in HELL that I would see a dime.  My boss included a mouse pad that reads "I <3 sales managers" (inside joke - they are the bane of my existance), a Starbucks giftcard and a note that said he appreciates all of my hard work.

    2.  Sherwin Williams is having a 30% off paint sale so I can get the actual color paint that I want to repaint my basement/office rather than having it mixed at Home Depot and ending up with a totally different color.

    3.  Farmer Brown from across the street brought me a big bag of squash from his garden and I can't wait to grill some up for lunch.  Yum.

  • I missed the article, but I love the concept! Little joys for me this week:

    1. Impromptu(ish) happy hour on Monday that was fabulously fun.

    2. An hour long walk this morning (I am working from home today). I need to do that more often (I know I won't, though).

    3. Working from home today. I know it's a gift, and it's been under review (attack) so I hope to be able to do this for a good long while.

    4. John didn't eat my Charleston Chews (I hide them in the freezer). (See above, need to walk more often.)

    "What is a week-end?"
  • T&C - totally jealous of your "B&B" time this morning.

WNW - oh no, sister, the day that you dump the pump is a day of national celebration.

    Tiny joys:

-that we enjoy the fruits of our neighbor's labor, currently eating delicious fresh tomatoes for no effort at all = priceless.

-that DS has turned a developmental corner and now will "make a good choice" at least half the time. Last night, he pitched a fit because he didn't want to go upstairs, and then I reminded him that "bath time means splash time," and I swear the kid grumbled "oh all right" under his breath and marched up the stairs. My big boy!

  • 1. I love Google. It helped me find something really meaningful and special the other day.

    2. Oreos and milk for breakfast. Delicious.

    3. Hanging out in pjs at 11 am (I am so going to miss this next week)

    4. Cuddling with my cat

  • 1) Going back to bed for half an hour after breakfast.  Since H is up and out of the house by then, it is pure snuggle time with the pup.

    2) Subsidized caffeine in the work place- coffee is free, but since I don't drink that, 40 cent bottles of soda make my morning sometimes.

    3)  The grill.  Being able to have such tasty and simple food is a definite joy.

  • 1. My canvas print from Shutterfly that should be delivered today. I don't want to brag, but the photo seriously looks like a professional took it.

    2. Extra money that's coming in from various sources, namely refunds.

    3. New lunchbox I bought at CVS on Sunday for only $5. I finally found one that actually fits my containers!

  • 1. I made a clutch purse this weekend, and although I am already thinking of ways to improve the design/durability, it felt so good to get back in to my sewing.

    2. I had enough time this morning to shave my legs and wear a dress today.

  • 1. I am actually finding time to workout this week!

    2.  Plenty of wine in the house for Friday (SIL and her kids arrive)

  • I'm a day late, but right now I'm enjoying my cup of tea and computer time while DS is still sleeping.

I'm off for 6 days in a row and I didn't have to use a vacation day.
