good wednesday morning!

i got to work this morning at 4:40--eek! i'm leaving early today for a big u/s screening and blood test. this is the one that tells us the likelihood of our baby will be born with severe defects. i'm really excited to see the baby on screen (it's supposed to be a 20min u/s), but i'm nervous in the small likelihood that something comes up. h and i are both not carriers for anything (that we know of), and we're generally low risk....but *just in case*.....it's scary.

i met up with a few friends yesterday for hh and i ordered with my eyes. everything looked good, and i ordered 4 plates...and that was seriously holding back. i omitted two things after she wrote it down haha. i was *starving* when i walked into the place, and i was way the opposite of starving on my way out. it was a good time though, with good friends.

hope everyone has a great wednesday!

Re: good wednesday morning!

  • so do your friends not notice the lack of alcohol consumption at hh? ;)

I also got here somewhat early (only 6:40 though, nothing compared to you!) since I have a lot to do.

no, they haven't noticed. the 2 people i went with don't drink very much (one had a beer, one had a perrier), and h's cousin.....MIL has made it a point to tell everyone that i'm allergic to everything and should be living in a bubble.  so, h's cousin doesn't think it's weird i'm not drinking, since she thinks i'm "allergic to lifting heavy objects", as MIL has told her.

this is awesome.  I have to say I'm terrified of the day we tell H's parents I'm pg because she will have all sorts of things to 'inform' me about.

Yes  don't let the wives tales die!

  • Wives' tales can be useful! Good luck on your ultrasound.

At work this morning, off at 1:30. Yay! For the rest of August, I just advise new students so less work for me.Tomorrow I am going shopping with my mom, which should be fun. I've spent a lot of money on clothes lately so I hope I don't buy too  much. I need to reign it in.

Ok, 5 hours to go before I go home. What can I do to keep busy...

  • baby jenn+kev #1 on the big screen today??? YAY!

work is so busy but i didn't want to stay away for too long. I'm sneaking in and sneaking out.

life has been soooo hectic lately. i need a break. next month can't come soon enough!

i still haven't got approved for mexico... i'm getting annoyed.

  • I really should get some work done today, but that really isn't shaping up to happen.

I've made some pretty amazing meals this week and now I'm starting to think I'm pushing my luck. I realize I could serve DH a paperbag with ketchup and he'd eat it, but I really like when he loves new meals.

I secretly wish I would have gone to culinary school. That degree would be far more useful to me than the useless ones I've got and don't use.

    Ogod.

My mom told me that in Korea, when you have a baby, mother and child are not allowed to leave the house for 100 days. And the mother is not allowed to wash her hair.

I told her she's crazy if she thinks I am not going to wash my hair for 3 months and then asked her pointedly if she followed these rules as well.

And her response was: Well, I wasn't in Korea when I had you and your grandmother couldn't force me to. But I am here! (Implying that she would make me stay in the house for 3 months and not wash my hair.)

To her credit, I think a lot of this rule is based in the fact that in the 'old days' there was a lot of disease and what not and newborns and weak new mothers had to be sequestered to try and keep them away from illness. :P Still, not the old days anymore dude.

There was an NPR story about a version of this tradition in China recently... let me see if i can find it.

this is still heavily practiced in america for chinese moms. i'm definitely doing this.  i didn't read the whole article, so i dunno if it's mentioned....but traditionally, after this there's a 30-day party...which is like a baby shower. after your baby has survived 30 days, that's when it becomes "real". you invite all your family and friends to meet your baby for the first time. and they shower baby with gifts (usually money). traditionally, you don't even name the kid until 30 days, but that has gone out the window for sure!

based on the article it sounds like you aren't supposed to do anything cold - cold drinks, ever feel cold (wear layers a lot), etc.  I think this probably goes back to the idea that feeling/eating/drinking cold = getting sick (because fevers can make you shiver I think?).  I remember this when I went to Japan and my host mom asked me what I wanted to drink and I said "oh water would be fine" and her response was "oh you shouldn't have anything cold, here's tea".  Well why ask me what I want in the first place?!  LOL

  • Ok, it's afternoon now but I've been busy!

Sellers of the house agreed to 3/4 of what we asked after inspection and we can live with that, so now we've signed off on that paperwork, too!! I *think* now all that's left is finalizing the mortgage loan and the closing papers?! EEEEEEEeeeEEEEE!! We may ACTUALLY finally get a house!!

Short work week for me since I had Monday off (returning from CA) and had already requested Friday off several months ago for a camping trip!

That's an interesting idea.  I assumed it had to do with water sanitation, but this makes sense, too.

i think originally it did...cold water = dirty water. hot water = cleaned water. and that's why "cold" makes you sick...
