Fairfax Animal Control
Something has been getting into our garbage for sometime. It chewed a hole in the top of our last herby curby.
Last night, when I took the trash out I finally discovered that it is a raccoon. It was just sitting there going through the bag of trash and munching away. We tried to scare it out by hitting the side of the can with a long broom handle, making loud noises and even throwing another bag of trash on top of it. But it refused to leave. Thankfully, this morning it was gone.
I live in Fairfax County. Does anyone know if Animal Control deals with this type of issue?
If not - any suggestions for keeping raccoons out of the trash? We keep the lid shut and it is heavy, but doesn't latch or anything.

I could be wrong, but I believe animal control only deals with dead or rabid/dangerous animals.
As to keeping the raccoon out, my parents battled for years with some wily ones at their house and what's worked best is using a bungee cord or two over the cover. They hook theirs onto the handles on each side or under the rim if there is room to grip on there (they now only buy cans that can accommodate the cord).
I know theres a sprinkle type substance you can use, I wonder if they make a spray so you can spray your can? Or maybe you can sprinkle some on top of your lid?
I just googled this, and it looks like you can make your own spray...

I'm pretty sure that AC will only come out if the animal is posing a hazard or potential danger.
My parents swear by ammonia - just buy a bottle and they would put a little bit on the ground surrounding the trash can and a little bit on top of the lid - no problems since then !
