My heart literally hurts :(

I elluded to this in the Wishful Wednesday post, but I'm pretty sure I have to put my cat down when I take him to the vet tomorrow.

Literally - I want to vomit.

I understand he is old, and not well and will be better off, but he is my furbaby and I'm totally in love with him.

What's making it worse is that DH and I have not been on the same page. I figured on Sunday this was coming down the pike - and DH keeps talking about him doing better. Honestly - he's 17. He's never going to return to his young form. I love DH to death - but honestly this is way hard enough, and I feel like he's just making it harder for me....

Just wanted to share - b/c literally I am at a loss and don't know what else to do :(

  • Hugs!

It's really an awful thing to have to go through. 17 is a great, long cat life and I'm sure he loves you just as much as you love him.

I'm pretty sure the girls on the pets board can point you to some resources on losing a pet if you wanted. Don't let anyone make you feel silly for being upset - it's a huge blow.

  • I'm so sorry, Jodie!  I know all to well the pain of losing a pet and dear friend! Sending lots of T&Ps to you and your kitty!!!

  • That's really sad.  17 years is a long time that you've had your kitty.  I imagine it would be a hard good-bye.  Left Hug

  • Thanks Ladies -

In fairness - I have only had him 8 years. My mom and I rescued him (actually my mom did - he was hanging around the parking lot at her condo for a solid month - it started to get cold at night, so she started leaving her garage open with cat food and a bed that we made him... - I'll never forget waking up one night to POURING rain and wondering where the cat was, the next morning when I left for work - I stuck my head in the garage and there he was - in the bed we made him. Anywho - as it got colder, she eventually brought him inside - I told her she was insane - she's got a bad habit of resucing crazy cats... and it never ends well. She kept him in the basement to keep him seperated from her b-chy cat..... We tried to find his owner - to no avail. Then he was going to do live at my sisters but I became totally attached and HAD to have him!!!)

He's been in my life longer than DH :(

As sad as I am today - I just keep reminding myself of all the love he has brought into both the lives of my husband and myself....

UGH - thanks for letting me "vent" (if that is the right word!)

  • Sorry to hear it. Putting down a pet is never easy, but when quality of life is not there for your pet (which is what it sounds like) the most loving (and difficult) decision to make may be putting him down. Best wishes to you and your DH as you go through this.

  • I'm so sorry hon. I lost a kitty back in March of this year, she died quickly, suddenly, and without explanation - and she was only a year old.

It sounds like your lovebug had a fantastic life with you, and I'm sure he will pass on as the happiest cat in the world, and just know that you WILL see him again. =)

BIG hugs, and if you need anything - I'm here for you girl!

  • *hugs*   It's soo hard to accept the fact that it is best to let our fur-babies go as to not let him/her suffer.  Everyone reacts differently.  Just sit down with DH and let him know how you feel.  I'm sure he just is reacting different to the situation than you.
  • I'm so sorry :( it is hard to lose a pet after less than half the time you've spent with your's. ((HUGS!!)) maybe after it's done and she's not suffering anymore you'll feel better.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your cat. You're right, nothing makes that easier. Especially having to convince someone who refuses to be honest with themselves about the situation.

Major hugs and vibes coming your way. I hope tomorrow goes as well as possible and that your H is able to be there for you.

  • I'm soooo sorry... our furbabies are our family. My heart hurts for you....
  • Thanks Ladies.

I'm doing a little better today.

DH and I talked it out quite a bit last night and are now on the same page. In addition Damon (kitty) has deteriorated so much that it has become obvious that it's his time. For this I am grateful, I will not second guess this decision and that is a good thing.
