Odd question - school starting?

So this is probably an odd question since I don't have kids, but has school started already?? I was walking to the Metro this morning and saw a school bus (Arlington County) picking up a kiddo. I seriously blinked a few times to make sure I wasn't seeing anything because it feels really early for school to be starting around here.

I guess the trend is becoming for schools to start earlier, but it makes me glad that when I was in school (New York and Maryland) we never started until after Labor Day.

Re: Odd question - school starting?

  • I've seen the Arlington bus picking up kids in my neighborhood for weeks, so they must run service for some summer program.  I don't think I've ever seen Arlington start this early, though I think PG county goes back soon.

  • I'm an APS teacher. This is our last week of summer school. We also have a few summer enrichment programs running. We also have one school that runs a year round schedule with several two week breaks throughout the year.

  • Our kids after hours program has a bus for their summer stuff.  They take the kids on some trips or they just rent awesome stuff.  Yesterday they had a giant blow up water slide thing that looked fun
  • OK seems like it was probably for some sort of summer school or summer program then. Whew! I was seriously concerned that school was starting already because it just strikes me as too early for that!

Of course anything before September seems early to me since I went from K-Master's program at schools that did not start until after Labor Day.

  • I work for Loudoun County schools and we (teachers) go back Wed. and kids start on the 29th.

  • My friend in Arizona has been in school for a week already.  I have a week and a half left :)
  • For APS teachers go back the 29th, kids on the 6th maybe.  Whatever date that Tuesday after labor day is.

Yea I have friends who are teachers in the Phoenix area and the kids started school this week. I always thought it was crazy when I lived out there because it's so flipping out in August! It's not like the kids can go outside for recess or anything - it's 118 degrees out.

  • FWIW, growing up (in FL) school always started mid- to late august.  Definitely a few weeks before Labor Day  But, we were also done by the last week in May, first few days of June!
  • LCPS used to go back after Labor Day but everything was moved a week earlier this year. Can't wait for June 8th to be the last day!
