Ack! Found an engorged tick on the floor!
Yep, still alive but barely. I flushed it down the toilet, and in the meantime I am brushing my dog and checking for more (none so far). He's a collie with a ton of hair so it's a chore. Going to wash the sheets for sure since he lays on our bed sometimes, and his bedding too.
Any experience with this? Should I call the vet as a precaution or as a necessity? I hesitate to jump to that first because I feel like every vet visit costs us $$$ and we're on one income. TIA.
Re: Ack! Found an engorged tick on the floor!
Did it have the head? Does your dog have a lyme vx? Is your dog on flea/tick preventative?
No head-search your dog for it, make sure it's not embedded, they can cause infection if they are deep enough.
I come from a state where lyme is pretty prevalent-I know it's not regularly vxed for out here. You vet would know the rate of lyme disease in your area.
Personally, if your dog is not on flea/tick meds, I would get him on it. We have our two on it year-round as a precaution.
If you are concerned, call your vet to ask their suggestions, but lyme can take 3-5 weeks to test positive-its a blood test, same snap test as your heartworm test, so IMO, I would wait (if your dog does not have an up to date lyme VX) and observe for symptoms. Some dogs to not have obvious symptoms but can be carrying the disease, so it may be worth a test if you are concerned in a few weeks.
Again, I come from a VERY heavy lyme area, NE seems to not be as concerned about lyme disease as VT-you vet can fill you in more, probably over the phone, but I would err on the side of caution.
It did have its head on it. It was soooooo nasty.
We have been lazy about making sure he gets his flea/tick meds, I admit.
I appreciate your feedback! I am going to vacuum too. I know ticks are (or can be) just a part of owning a dog, but I am majorly grossed out! Thanks again!
omg, PUT HIM DOWN.
Okay, that may be a bit extreme. Ugh, I have the shivers for you.
