WWMND?

H is going to go to training in March and it was originally supposed to be TDY, but now it is a PCS.  He will be 3 hours away for 6 months (March-August) and I'm trying to decide if I'm going with.  I don't want to be away from him and I really don't want him to be away from baby, but neither of us want to PCS 3 times in 13 months.

If I go with him we'll lose housing here in DC and we'll have to get back on the ridiculous wait list and hope they aren't at capacity because technically we aren't supposed to be living here.  We talked about having me come up every weekend to see him, but I don't know how feasible that it with a 4 month old.

So, WWMND?  I'm leaning towards sucking it up and moving but I'd love your input.  TIA!

  • Will TMO move you that many times?  If so, I'd probably suck it up and go with, especially if I weren't working.

Yep, they'll move us.  I wouldn't consider it if they wouldn't.  I won't be working at that point

  • Can you afford to live in the two different places? Traveling with a little baby is easier than traveling with a toddler, who gets bored easily. Why can't you two trade off weekends to see each other as well?

IDK. You have to do what will work better for you, what does your gut tell you? I absolutely hate moving. I would want to stay put. LOL.

  • Since they'll move you, I'd go.

What are the chances of him staying in that location after the training is done?

They were planning on making H stay in NC since he had just come from the west coast and they weren't going to pay to move him twice in less than a year, but since he was fleet returning, he was able to get around it. If it were his first enlistment, it would've been different.

I would go. If they're paying, don't do a DITY and collect the DLA.

No chance of him staying in that location after he gets done.  We'll be coming back here for another 4 years after he's done there unless he changes his MOS, which is going to happen but not right away.

I was thinking about storing some stuff in this area if we do go and just take the essentials.  I could be without a lot of my stuff for 6 months.

We could swing living in two places, but it would be tight and we would have to pay the minimum on my loans instead of paying over double on them.  We only have one car right now and I don't want to buy another unless it's 100% necessary, which it might be if I don't go with him.

I started to rethink my comment until this. I would absolutely go.

They'll pay DLA even with a DITY, but you only qualify for DLA once per year, so that's kind of a moot point.

And there's no way I'd do a DITY with an infant.  Noooo way.

Considering this, I would move with him. I like the idea of putting some stuff in storage and only taking the essentials so it's not a huge move.

Oh I know they will. haha We got it. I should have said "Have them move you and collect the DLA".

Is that once per calendar year or once per fiscal year? H received a DLA for the move to and from NC. So twice since September.

    Fiscal year.

  • Thanks for the input ladies.  I hate moving back to back, but it looks like that's what is best for us right now.

  • I guess I am an odd ball here, because you are saying he is coming right back to where you are now right after. It makes no sense to me to move things into storage and give up a house and move just to be moving right back to the same spot, and then have to go back into a waiting list to get back into housing. So then you have to search for housing all over again. Plus only recieving DLA once per year is another downside.

A 6 hour drive is nothing with an infant some of the best traveling we have done is with the kiddos were less than a year old. Not to mention I am sure your H can get a pass to come visit on the weekends too it can go both ways.

  • I wouldn't go. It's three hours away for six months. I'd just plan a long weekend at least once a month to go up and see him. Perhaps there's a decent extended stay hotel in the area. I'd probably also have him come down once a month.

And honestly, if you can afford living in both places, you can likely afford a 2k little car for him to drive while he's there instead of having to share the car or having him take it.

If you stayed, could you remain in housing or would you have to leave?

I haven't checked with housing yet, but I'm almost positive that we  would lose our housing and I don't know where we would move to.  I'm not worried about being able to afford a car, but car insurance is double here what it was where we were living before.

I'll have H check with the people he works with - they all went through this their first year here.  Most of the people live off base so it wasn't so much of a problem when they did this.

  • So either way you're losing your housing?

In that case, I'd go ahead and move but I'd have them put your belongings in storage where you are and rent a small apartment and furniture for six months where your H is. But there is no way I'd set up regular house for such a short period of time, no way.

Yep, that's where we're at.  I really like the idea of only taking some stuff with us. Thanks for the advice
