Why I am not self employed

Along with my "normal" 8 - 5 job (9 - 8 job ha ha) I do some consulting work on the side.  It is easy, easy work and really good money, but one client is really wearing on my nerves.

Like, I fired them they have made me so mad.

For one thing, they are living in the 80s and don't believe in email. They have it, they just don't ever CHECK it.  Now, I am their "employee" so I completely understand that I need to work around this which is fine except....they are constantly finding excuses to delay paying me.  I guess it isn't that big of a deal but when I have plans to spend the money in Dallas this weekend and it is now obvious I won't receive a check before I leave, I am mad as a hornet.  This time, their excuse is that they "can't open the file" that I sent them.  The file is in WORD and is the same file I send every.single.month (I just write over the previous month's work).  Sometimes, they don't have an excuse, it just takes them over a month to pay and when I inquire they blame it on an accounting process (*head desk*) - just classic delay of payment crap.  For awhile, I thought it might be good to go out on my own and do this sort of work but I can't stand the collections crap.  I just think it would be way less stressful for them to pay than constantly make up excuses for their lack of payment.

Anyhoo, this is the last report I am required to give to them and I just want it over with so I can move on with my life and buy a pair of Valentino boots this weekend.

The End.

  • H deals with the same thing. He has a day job, but also freelances. Several of his clients have also become friends, and apparently have a very "easy-going" attitude when it comes to billing. I like his clients, but I cannot fathom how anyone feels okay about just not paying someone else to do work. Or even about delaying payment. I can understand being a few days late, but we're talking months. So annoying.

I say buy the boots anyway. Didn't you get a pay increase? :)

LOL. Yes and I am still getting paid from my last job.  BUT the proceeds from my contract work is what I use to fill up my closet. I don't feel comfortable using "our" money for overpriced boots.  Even if they are super super super awesome.

  • Gotcha. How responsible of you. :) On a related note, I need to get a freelance gig to fill up my closet. Have fun in the big D!

  • Oh Lord. First they claimed the file was password protected, which it is not. Then they claimed it was in a new version of Word and they couldn't open it.  So, I told them I would fax the report to them - and now they claim their fax is broken.

    Coincidences? I think not.

  • I think you should send a certified copy in the mail. Then they have no excuse, and you will have proof of them recieving it since they will have to sign for it.
