homemade dishwasher detergent

okay, at first I was skeptical at making my own because I like cascade with bleach - but we do have hard water and when I washed all the baby bottles, it left a film on them.

So, I followed a link I had saved that Courtney posted a long time ago, and made my own.

BEST.STUFF.EVER. -- And so cheap to make a huge batch!! Works better than my cascade, and no film. I made a batch, and put it in a big ziploc bag, and for a few days after you kinda have to squish it around to keep it from clumping - after that, I put it in a labeled fliptop clear jar.

Home Made Dishwasher Detergent

  • 2 c borax
  • 2 c Arm & Hammer washing soda
  • 2 c lemi shine*
  • 1 c kosher salt

Re: homemade dishwasher detergent

  • wth is lemi shine?

I made some once with a recipe that I think was identical to this but it used citric acid instead of lemi shine.

It didn't work so well. Eventually left a film. Bah, I really wanted to like it (like you said, so cheap!)

  • Do you use a specific amount for each load or just fill up the soap container?

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Lemishine is a product in the cleaning isle, for your dishwasher - I think it *is* citric acid, not sure though.

Anyway, its a tbsp per load - I put a tbsp in the container, and then like 1/2 in the prewash spot.

I found a Chefmate coffee scoop at target that I tied on the container.

  • I am using a similar recipe, but with citric acid. So far, so good! I think tossing some vinegar in helps with the film as well.
  • Lemishine is amazing stuff! I may have to try this when our container of tabs runs out! :)

  • Where did you guys find Lemishine?  The two times I have thought to look for it, the store didn't have it (or I just didn't look in the right spot).

  • I've been using a pretty similar recipe. Totally agree, I'll never go back to Cascade. This is the one I've been using:
    1 box Borax
1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
    24 packages of lemondate kool-aid
    3 cups Epsom Salt
(1 Tbsp of this mixture per load)
