IUD - Pain, spotting, discharge, etc! What's your experience??

I had an IUD inserted 2 months ago. It was a very easy experience, with way less pain than I expected. Here's my experience:

Week 1: Lots of cramping, but not unmanagable. (Thanks, Advil!)
Weeks 2-3: Bleeding. Not a ton of it, but it was constant for about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks.
Weeks 4-5: Steady cramping. It stayed at around a 2 and would climb to a 6. Unlike week 1, it was CONSTANT never-ending cramps. I was also discharging brownish stuff (TMI!) no odor.
Weeks 6-8 (where I am now..) some cramping here and there, and a cloudy (non-sticky) discharge. Not a ton of it, but it's still there!

Through all of this I have had quite a bit of pain on my right side during sex. Like, "OW OW OW!" pain... I went to the Dr and she looked in and said placement is good, no infection, etc. I had an ultra sound yesterday and will be hearing back next week. Thoughts?! What's your experience?? Does the discharge ever stop? Does the cramping ever stop?? Heeeeelp! =)

  • Which IUD did you get?

I have the Mirena and after about the 2nd week, I had no more spotting or cramping on a daily basis. I only got cramping when I should have gotten my period and I didn't usually get cramping prior to the Mirena being inserted. I had no pain during sex.  After 3 yrs I spot now and then (a few times a year for about a day or two) and maybe a dull cramp here and there every few months, for the most part I forget I even have it.

Hopefully your IUD didn't shift or something.  Did they check you for bacterial vaginosis?  I know that's common if you have an IUD.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this! I know that what you are going through is not all uncommon...but I have had wonderful luck with mine....have never gotten a period with mine and minimal cramping (I have the mirena)
  • I bled for 6 weeks straight when I firt got my IUD.  I also had constant cramps for 4 weeks and cramps durring and after sex for 8 weeks.  After that, I was fine. My Dr said it was pretty normal and the device was getting settled in my uterus.  I've had it for 3 1/2 years now and have no complaints.

  • Hi! I have an IUD (the Mirena) and have had it for 5 years. I'm about to get it taken out and get a new one inserted. Since I had it put in, I have barely had a period (seriously, like 3 hrs of spotting a month), although I do feel some cramps sometimes and still feel like I get PMS. I had some more intense cramping about a year ago, got an ultrasound, but nothing came up abnormal. I have had an overall great experience with it. Best birth control decision I've ever made. I have a few friends who have gotten it before, too and no one I know has had a problem with it. You just have to check the strings once a month, and pay attention to your body. You will know if something feels wrong. It wasn't a blast to get it put in, but i would still highly recommend it to anyone who either can't tolerate hormones in pill form or can't remember to take them.
  • I also have the Mirena, have had it for 4 years now and I have to say I thik it's the best thing I ever did. It hurt quite a lot having it put in and  I had a stomach ache for a few days after, then spotting for about a month but since then... absolutely nothing. No periods, no spotting, no cramps - it's great! I've just gotten married so when it has to be removed this time next year, it will hopefully be baby-making time! I have been broody for a few years but hubby and I wanted to wait until we were married and had a bigger house (one out of two complete)! But yeah the Mirena has worked great for me, although I suppose it's different for everyone. I never had any period pain/heavy periods before I had it put in so that probably helps!
  • Oh my gosh, thank you all so much! After reading all of your success stories, I'm more willing to sit through this for a bit... Yes, I have the Mirina as well.

I had an ultrasound and the dr said everything looks totally normal. No abnormal discharge, etc.!  So, at least I don't have an infection/it didn't fall out of place/etc... Hopefully I can just paddle through this and the pain will stop soon!! Thanks for all of your encouragement! I loved reading all of your stories!
