Updated: T&P's for my pup, I'm the worst dog mom ever

I let Amsterdam out in the backyard as usual this morning and he ate some of my tomato plant. I had no idea tomatoes can be poisonous/make dogs sick. I've looked up every other plant that we have except that one. The wind knocked the tomato plant over last night and I didn't see that when he went out. I guess he walked right over and decided to give it a try. A few minutes after I let him back in he started acting really lethargic, panting and had glassy eyes. I picked him up and he barely responded. He threw up several times and lost his bowels. I rushed him to the vet, thank god they open early for emergencies. He's going to be fine, by the time we got there he had perked up a lot. The vet thinks he purged most of it himself but they're keeping him today to give him charcoal and an iv. I've been beside myself, I'm so mad that I didn't check to see if the tomato would hurt him.

If you could send some feel better vibes to my little guy I would appreciate it. A few get through the day without sobbing vibes might be useful to me, too.

Update:
Amsterdam is home and feeling as good as new! Thank you all for your thoughts and kind words. Also, the vet bill was only $65, I was amazed.

  • So sorry! At least you were there to take care of him and acted quickly! I hope he gets through it quickly, and you can make it through your day in one piece.

I had no idea either, and since we were planning on getting a dog/s soon, that's good to know!

  • Thoughts for both of you.Interesting because I didn't know this about tomatoes.
Another old nestie with a new name.
  • Thanks ladies. The people at the vet didn't seem to know about the tomatoes either. The vet told me she looked it up after they took A back the first time.

I've read that they aren't good for cats either. Fatty likes to chew on them if he can get to them so I looked it up a while back. Meanwhile I know someone who gives her cat tomato sauce. Maybe it's just the raw tomatoes?

From what DH read (while I was hysterical) it's the plant. The fruit is fine for most animals.

  • I hope Amsterdam has a quick recovery!

Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family, which is poisonous (not just to dogs, but other animals as well). It is the plant itself, not the fruit, that is poisonous,

  • Awwww poor pup. Don't feel bad my dog has eaten all kinds of stuff he's not supposed to. No matter how hard you try, they always manage to get into something.
  • How scary! I'm so glad he ok. Poor little guy. Don't feel bad. I didn't know that about tomato plants either.
