What do we think of ceiling fans?
Are they out of style and cheesy, or okay? We moved into our new construction home earlier this year and we still need to do some overhead lighting in some of the rooms. DH asked about whether I wanted to do ceiling fans or regular lights. Honestly, I'm not too much of a "fan" (ha!) but I haven't really shopped or looked at them in the last, well, ever.

We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I'm less of a fan of ceiling fan/light combos and more of a "do a ceiling fan if you can also do recessed lighting" fan. I pretty much always hated the look of ceiling fans, but we decided to install on in our bedroom and one in our family room just based on the fact that we have one zone heat in our house and it helps to cool the room so well, and we don't have to have the rest of the house freezing cold (with just the a/c) and therefore saves a ton of $$ on the electric bill.
I've gotten used to the look and absolutely don't mind it at all now, I actually barely notice them. I think that they definitely are less noticeable the higher your ceilings are, so I barely notice it at all in our family room as the ceilings are pretty high.
I love ceiling fans - and there are actually some really gorgeous ones out there. Check out Casablanca fans - http://www.casablancafanco.com/
They're fantastic for helping save money on your energy bills, too!
I don't think they're ALL downright FUG but I can't say I've seen any super stylish ones that just had me drooling.
DH begged till I caved and we got one for our bedroom. I really wanted to do the uber glam chandelier over the bed kinda thing but we ended up with a boring-but-functional fan.
I will admit I loved my ceiling fans in Texas. Remote control with three speed and light settings. I loved crawling into bed, grabbing the clicker on the nightstand, and turning on the fan for white noise.
Proof that we are overthinking the ceiling fan issue: I have been in SSW's house twenty times and never even noticed that she had a ceiling fan in the living room.
lol. When I read your post, I was like - wait, what? she has a ceiling fan AND recessed lights?!
So, yes, it's quite obviously we all need something else to do with our time other than worry about how ceiling fans look, since no one notices them anyway!

Love them for bedrooms. DH installed one in every BR in our house when we moved in four years ago. In warm weather, he likes it on while he sleeps.
With kids, to me, they are essential - baby nurseries and little kids' bedrooms can get, um, kind of funky smelling. Pop that ceiling fan on high for a few minutes and Shazam! - better than Febreeze.
Congratulations, Artslvr, you just sold me on them for the bedrooms!!
I grew up with them in my bedroom and I really love them!
I wish we had some in our new place, I loved them in our former place.
They're awesome for saving energy and I love having the windows open and AC off when it is cool enough.

our house came with a fan in every bedroom and we love it!
our master bath has it too
looks like you might be past the age risk, but we actually put one in DD's nursery because they supposedly help reduce the risk of SIDS. we have one in our bedroom too, but mainly use it for times we can't justify using the a/c yet and need a breeze. Also loved it for nights it was cool enough to sleep with the windows open and it helped move the cool air in... though I don't feel safe doing that anymore since our br is on the ground floor.
that's a great point about SIDS, I had it on all the time when DD was a baby just for that reason. I was less worried with DS (2nd baby syndrome)
