paypal question

I have an "old friend" who owes me a TON of money.  This friend is finally in a financial position to maybe be able to start paying some of it back.  I want to make one last attempt to ask for it, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to get the money.  I know that they won't be able to give it to me all at once, but I also don't want this person to know where I live now.  So I was thinking that paypal might be a good option.  what do you think?  This person already has my email address, so it should work fine, right?  And there is no fee to either of us as long as they use a bank account instead of a credit card, right?  Any better suggestions would also be very welcome.

All that said, this will be the first and last time I'm going to actually ask for the money.  I really would like it back for some upcoming expenses, but I don't want this person to really be back in my life, so I'm not going to go down the path of fully opening the communication back up.  My happiness is worth more than that.

TIA ladies!

Re: paypal question

  • If you really want your money back and don't want said person to know where you are, then paypal is probably the best bet.  However, if it is an "old friend" who may have access to your banking information, then I'd explore other options...perhaps sending the payment to a family member or something.

The paypal website *says* that all the information the sender needs is my email address, and that they don't have access to account information.  I thought about having it sent to my brother (lawyer, so "old friend" wouldn't mess with him) but if "old friend" actually pays (which I doubt) it will come in multiple payments, not a lump sum.  I don't want to put my brother out that much to keep track of that stuff and send it back to me.

  • I've made and received payments via Paypal for years and haven't ever had a problem. I haven't ever had anyone steal my banking information and I haven't ever known anyone else's information.

I think you should be safe using Paypal.

Awesome!  Thank you!  I thought it sounded pretty safe, but it's nice to hear from someone who has done it.  Especially someone as cool as you Wink
