Where do you keep shoes?

When you come in our front door, there is a big staircase, and we keep the shoes in boot trays in the hallway along the side of the stairs.  I think it would look so much better/less cluttered if I could put them somewhere else.  We have a mudroom but the closet is pretty small.  We only have out the shoes we are wearing that season (like sandals vs boots), but there are still quite a few shoes.

Assuming you take your shoes off when you come indoors, where do you put your shoes?

Re: Where do you keep shoes?

  • At the new house we haven't figured it out yet, so shoes all over. I hate it too.

At our old house we didn't have a mudroom so we got a nice cedar bench with two 'shelves' underneath. The cubby things wouldn't work for boots, but the shelves were good because you could 'fold' the tops over. I think we got it at solutions or improvements catalog.

  • We have a coat closet right by the font door.  I found a 3-tiered shoe rack that I have in there.  The bottom rack is tall, so boots fit perfectly.  I think I actually found it in an LTD catalog.

If you have enough room, I saw a girl who took a cheapie book shelf (the 5ft or 6ft kind) and turned it into a huge shoe rack in her closet.  You could maybe make the bottom 2 or 3 for shoes and top for bags, purses.  If you aren't into the super tall one, I think they have some that are only 2 or 3 shelves total.  Don't know if your hallway is roomey enough, but if it is, you could store a ton of shoes on one.

  • I either put them back up in my bedroom closet in the box I got them in - yes I keep all my shoes in the box they originally came in..

or if they are like sneakers/boots, flip flops I put them back out on the shelf in the garage - I hate shoes all in the foyer as well.

  • We have the bench w/ shoes under it too. We also have shoes everywhere in the house--closets, under my desk, you name it! We want to stop wearing shoes inside, but it is sooo hard!

  • We always come in through our garage.  We put up three rows of that rubbermaid shelving that we keep them on.  Those are the shoes we wear most.  I keep all my other shoes in my closet in crates or rubbermaid bins.

  • We have shoes everywhere! DH actually owns more pairs than I do, scary, but the shoes we wear most often are on a 3 tiered shoe rack right by the door. We have a small house with next to no closet space, so I dont have many options.

  • In the winter we have a little spot behind our front door for dirty boots.  In other months, we just put them back in our bedroom closet.

  • next to the door in the foyer (my small a$$ foyer)
