Clicky Poll: Guns in the home
Re: Clicky Poll: Guns in the home
I'm a special snowflake, DAMMIT!
We have one but it's strictly for DH's job. If he didn't have his job, we wouldn't have the gun.
ETA: We also have a second gun, but it's locked up & technically not ours. We're not even sure if it works. It's a gun that's been passed around DH's family & we just kinda got stuck with it.
Not a special snowflake, the question clearly states "if not required for work". So you would fall under the last answer then.
I will also offer that I was never comfortable with them because I grew up in a very gun-ignorant family. My mom is afraid of them, and still doesn't like the thought of it in our house, though she doesn't mind DH having it around for security.
When I married DH, I knew I'd have to be ok with them. But he's smart about it and made sure to take me to the range, teach me how it works, etc. I'm the type that just has to know how something works and how to use it to be fine.
"My 101 List - Updating asap, I swear!
But I wannnnnnna be a special snowflake.
ITA with you. DH has taken me to the range to teach me how to use his. It's actually a lot of fun.
Does not having a gun in the home or being against guns in the home make someone gun-ignorant?
I was trying to figure out how to say that. I just meant very uneducated about them in general. My mom's just plain afraid of them and refuses to even take DH up on his offer to teach her, though she likes him having it around.
"My 101 List - Updating asap, I swear!
I grew up in the country and all my friends hunted. My grandfather was also a sharp shooter in the military. I learned gun safety at an early age and have no issue with them... however... I'm not comfortable having them in my home at this point in time because my (and DH's) lack of knowledge of gun handling.
With proper training I would be fine with it.
Are you against them for home protection? Just curious, since I often wonder how realisticly helpful a gun would be in a home invasion when it's super locked-up. That said, ppl with kids obviously need to secure them. Seems like it would be a difficult balance to strike.
This is exactly my argument against having them for home protection. It seems like you'd need easy access if you have one for that reason and I'm not willing to have one within eacy access with kids around. Thankfully, DH and I feel the same way about it.
Exactly this. And I don't even have kids.
