So Violet is one week old, and we've got one week of BF down! She immediately latched on and spent a good 15-20 minutes on each side just after birth, and then we had a pretty easy go of it in the hospital. I was having issues with getting her to latch in cross-cradle, so the lactation consultant showed me the football hold and that is perfect for her.

The first few days we were doing 15ish minutes per side every 2.5-3 hours, which was okay, but then my nipples just couldn't handle it. Dry, bloody, cracked, you know, even with the lanolin. I also got engorged pretty fast. I looked on the BF board and saw many girls alternate breasts for entire feedings, so we tried that and it's going SO much better! She'll do 25-35 minutes on a side, alternating every other feeding, about 2.5-3 hours apart still.

I do find that in the morning, I'm completely engorged on both sides, so the past 3 I've fed her from one, pumped the other, then alternated thru the day and they seem to be more under control. I'm getting about 3 oz. from the one side and then I get just under an oz. from the side she's already fed from when I pump. My sister said I'm a freaking cow with how much I'm producing, lol.

So I did have a couple questions for you! First, I'd like to introduce her to the bottle as soon as you think it's appropriate so JJ can feed her and also on the rare occasion we're out and I'm not wanting to BF (next Friday we're going to visit JJ's grandparents after our pedi appt, for example). So when and how would you introduce the bottle? Also, she's roughly 7.5 lbs., so how much should I give her in the bottle for a feeding? Lastly, I'm comfortable feeding her at every feeding, but gosh pumping is so much easier. I'd love to be able to do maybe 2 bottle feedings a day, the rest BF just so she starts getting used to it for when she's in daycare. How soon would you add in a 2nd or 3rd bottle feeding? She'll be starting daycare at 12 weeks old, for reference.

Take your time answering, from what I've heard most people don't start the bottle for at least 2 weeks, so I know we have time. Also, she will NOT take a paci (which doesn't bother me) so I don't know if that will also mean she won't like the bottle...

  • ::butting in:: You are so lucky Ash!!! Cherish your BFing time! After 2 and a half weeks, the last week of which has been a regime of nurse, pump, then feed pumped breastmilk and supplement formula, pumping between feedings, and drinking milkmaid herbal teas to try to increase my milk supply, I'm having to switch to all formula :( it breaks my heart to have tried so hard and not succeed. Since our appt this morning I've been crying on and off all day. The most I was ever able to pump combined between both breasts was less than an ounce and that was early in the morning when my breast were 'full' :'( But with the formula at least Ellie is finally back to her birth weight and started pooping since she's no longer underfed or just sustaining. She will be healthy and I know that is the important thing and the doctor agreed that it's the right thing to do at this point. It still makes me sad though. Please know how lucky you are!!

  • I'm butting in too. :-) btw, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I am so behind on posts! I will leave the "when to introduce the bottle" thing up to Tiff. :) I think I did it around 5 weeks and James had no problem switching between bottle and breast. And I only gave him 1-2 bottles a week, but I did not have to prepare for him to go to daycare, so that does make a difference. Just wanted to comment on a couple of things regarding breastfeeding. 1. If you do a lot of pumping and bottle feeding instead of nursing, you may not get as much out as if you were nursing. Even though it doesn't seem like it, the baby is MUCH more efficient than a breast pump. Just guessing, but I would think direct breastfeeding as much as possible in the early weeks would help regulate your supply for your baby. I was a cow too haha - after a few weeks, I could pump 3 oz after James ate off of me, or around 7-8 if he ate from a bottle. It's insane how much you can produce! 2. Pumping and bottle feeding may seem easiest now, but I promise breastfeeding is the more convenient route. In the beginning, I said I would rather pump and bottle feed because it was so easy to pump while James slept, hold him while getting the bottle ready, etc. But it doesn't take long before they aren't sleeping all the time, so you aren't as free to pump, they get squirmy so dealing with bottles can get annoying, etc. So IF you are able and willing to primarily breastfeed, it will probably be the easier option in a few weeks.
