I know I don't post here often; I'm hoping you'll forgive me. I'm American, living in the US, married to a green card holder from India. I've also lives for extended periods in West Africa.
DH is leaving this Friday & I am following him along with SIL next Friday to Chennai where ILs live. MIL is a lawyer but has end stage bone cancer, which is why we are going there, as her doctors said she has 1-3 mos @ best; she also is not an estate lawyer. I've been looking online for lawyers in Chennai to deal with her estate. FIL is still very much alive but as you can imagine is beside himself & unable to handle things on his own.
FIL was a very smart man back in the 1970s when land was dirt cheap. There were really no such thing as 401K's in India until recently so people tend to buy land, jewelry, etc. as a means of savings. Of course, Indian record keeping also sucks, so he lost some of it to his brother's scheming. Seriously, his own brother sued him for land & won. They still have a lot, much of it beach front (although the palms got taken out by the tsunami) which needs to be protected in case FIL ever needs to "cash in" for his care down the road. Of course, this is the furthest thing from his mind right now so I've volunteered to deal with this, God help me.
So, I'm wondering if anyone knows of good estate lawyers in Chennai? The kicker is both kids (SIL & DH) are US green card holders so someone who specialzes in international stuff would be best. I will try to be around this board more often. Thanks so much.
Re: Total long shot: lawyers in Chennai (Madras)
Don't know any estate lawyers in Chennai (I do in Bangalore), but the Consulate has a list of lawyers they recommend: http://chennai.usconsulate.gov/pdfs/attorneyslist100112.pdf
