Kelliebellie

I read your response to Ashlee. I am sorry sweetie. I don't know a lot about BF yet, so forgive my crazy question but do the doctors think your supply will come in shortly (just taking it a while) or do they think that it won't come in?

Re: Kelliebellie

  • Hi Heather, thanks for the thoughts. The doctor basically said it is 'highly unlikely' that my milk production would increase significantly if it hasn't already with the regime we've been on since meeting with the lactation consultant. Most people respond to that schedule with a noticeable increase in milk within 1-2 days. I'm on day 5 with no increase. She said usually a failure to increase happens with someone with thyroid or endocrine problems (which I don't have) but that sometimes it doesn't work and they don't know why. She said that doesn't mean I wouldn't be able to BF another LO in the future, so I'm going to pack up my fancy pump and store it for the future. Are you thinking of BFing? My doctor had recommended The Nursing Mothers Companion by Kathleen Huggins. I've read it nearly cover-to-cover and re-read some chapters. It's very informative!

  • I am hoping to BF and we have a class next week on it. I will look that book up.

I am sure it is tough but I know you have done everything that you can do for that precious LO.

  • kel, did anyone suggest herbs in pill form or Reglan/domperidone to you before telling you this stuff about increased production in 1-2 days?! That sounds totally crazy to me..

There are lots of more options out there if you want to try it out.

  • Hey Tiff. Unfortunately because of previous health issues I have to be very careful about herbal supplements and meds. Basically, I avoid them like the plague unless absolutely necessary! I'll drink a few mugs a day of herbal teas, but I'm not supposed to take concentrated supplements (PS Those health (heart) issues shouldn't affect my milk). The doc told me with the amount of milk I'm producing I could continue the schedule we've been on and feed her what i can get but that she would not expect much improvement after what we've tried and that being after exclusive BFing for almost 2 weeks. The demand has definitely been there, but the supply has not. The bigger concern is Ellie's health and she said this is the first check-up since birth that she is thriving the way a newborn should and so our priority of course is to continue that. She is a very pro-BFing doctor with over 20 years experience and she thought the switch to all formula was the best option at this point and I definitely trust her instincts and experience. I really appreciate all the support and advice (you're progammed in my cell phone now!!) and it has been a hard and emotional decision but I think this is the right decision for us now. I will definitely try BFing again if/when there is a LO#2. I've learned so much from this experience and even told DH that had I been through this earlier in life I think I would have become an L&D or lactation nurse because having good people in those positions makes such a difference!!!!
