I am not sure if this would be the correct board to ask about Worcester, but it seems pretty close to Boston.
Anyway, it looks like DH and I are going to moving up the Worcester area from Philadelphia. Does anyone live there or are familiar with it? Honestly, I have never been north of New York on this coast and have no idea of what life is like in NE. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciate because right now I am going into this completely blind.
What is the job market and housing markets like? DH is getting a promotion as his current job, so I would be the one looking. I am a PA certified teacher and currently work in social work, but am open to pretty much anything. Also, would COL be similar to Philadelphia's? TIA!
Yup, he was born that way.

Re: Worcester
Welcome! Me & DH moved to Massachusetts in 2007 and lived in Natick, which is more of a outer suburb of Boston. We have moved to Grafton a few months ago, which is a suburb of Worcester. There are definately areas to avoid in Worcester, but a lot of great things about the area. And it is a little bit cheaper than the Boston area.
My DH is originally from the Wilkes-Barre area. Send me a PM and we can chat some more about the area. Good luck!
I live in Worcester county, about 20 min west of Worcester. I'm a little over an hour out of Boston.
There are nice areas of Worcester, like the Tatnuck area, but to be honest, I hate that city. Maybe a town outside? Shrewsbury and Auburn are the next towns over, and are nice. I hear they can get pricey though. I live out in the Leicester/Spencer area and it's very quiet out this way. Taxes aren't too bad either.
As for the job market, I got laid off almost a year ago, and can't find work. But I worked in research and was very specialized. I know a few teachers/social workers, and they didn't have problems finding jobs right out of school.

Lizzay- thanks for the town recommendations. DH wants to live in the city, but I am not sold on that idea. Right now we are open to just about anything. I am hoping that I might be able to get back into teaching in Mass. PA is so hard to get teaching jobs. I have to contact the Department of Education to figure out what I need to do. Sorry you are having a tough time finding a job. I think the plan is for me to stay here in PA and look for a job up there while still working at current job, but we'll have to see.
I went to school in Worcester. Honestly I wouldn't want to live there permanently. I'd rather live in some of the surrounding towns (Shrewsbury, Northborough, Westborough). If he won't budge on not living in the city there was a nice residential area by my school: west of Park Ave between Salisbury St. and Pleasant St. had some nice homes. Also, out by Quinsigamond Lake and UMass Med is nice too. GL!
Thanks! He is part human, with a ton of personality, but cracks me up every single day.
Are you licensed as a social worker? If so, what fields are you interested in (I really only know medical, so I'd only be a help if that's the case!)
Welcome! And my nephew is a vizsla!
I am not licensed as a social worker, just working in the field right now. I currently work with children with mental health needs. I think that with the move, I want to get out of the field, not because I don't like it, more because this job kind of fell into my lap and I know it will be really difficult to get into the field somewhere else without a license.
Thanks for asking though.
Oh and your cat is awesome looking!
I lived in worcester for two years...and I agree with the park ave, and the area up near the lake (i lived on plantation st when i lived there) Shrewsbury right near the worcester line is awesome too
I worked for a behavioral school that serviced the Worcester Public schools so PM me if you have any questions.

The MA education market isnt that great right now (I'm looking for a guidance counselor job thats really few and far between) but if you can figure out the certification you should be fine
Getting fit for IVF!
Thanks
-- he's been featured in a few posts on the Pets board (where I recognize you from) looking for advice or whatnot for the trouble he's caused (destroying the Christmas tree--> emergency surgery--> found my hair elastic, not the missing ornament).
I'd look into taking the MTELS (i think that's the right thing-- the mass teachers license) just to have under your belt.
I live a couple towns over from Worcester. Its got some interesting parts to the city, but they are trying to revamp some areas. Shrewsbury Street has some good restaurants and I think they are trying to redo some Mill type buildings into loft style apartment/condos which if you are looking for city living would be kind of fun. Def. be open to some of the suburbs of Worcester though when you are looking.
Get the MTELs done ASAP b/c schools can hire you on a waiver if you're waiting for your results and stuff. They take what feels like forever, but I'm not sure if that is any different from any other state.
I would avoid living IN Worcester if you can help it. schools aren't great and it's not really anything like what he may be thinking of when he thinks "city" (ie: it's not like Boston or Philly).
Some great suburbs would be Westborough (where I grew up), Northborough, Shrewsbury, Grafton, and West Boylston. If you go a tad further, Bolton, Hudson, and Milford are good too.
Hi, I am late to this but welcome! I live north of Worcester and work as a social worker in Worcester. I know the area well because I do home visits. Feel free to PM me about areas to avoid and about SW jobs. I think you will find there are a lot of SW jobs. I have an MSW, and work for the state child protection agency. There are a lot of hospital and elder care services jobs posted in the area. School jobs are hard to get, and TBH the Worcester schools are pretty rough.
I think COL would be lower than Philly, but I could be wrong.
haha, yeah, COL here isn't lower than most places and definitely not Philly. Obviously parts of the state are better than others, but in general, COL is definitely higher here (I moved to the Worcester area from the Philly area 10 years ago)
