Best/favorite laundry detergent

Does buying the more expensive laundry detergent really make a difference? I need someone who has really done their homework. What gets stuff the cleanest, doesnt leave much residue, smell.

I had a friend recomend Tide free and clear, was using Purex, mainly because it's cheaper.

TIA

Re: Best/favorite laundry detergent

  • I can definitely see a difference between when I use tide vs cheaper detergents like Xtra. Tide can get out on the first wash best.

  • When I first started doing laundry, I was using Gain and didn't like it...I switched to Tide and personally, I don't like it but by husband does.  It doesn't get out all the stains, but maybe I'm expecting too much.  I've heard that Method works well though...

On a side note, the best pre-wash stain treatment I've came across is OxyClean.  It gets out blood, food, anything you can imagine.

  • I used to use Tide but I switched to Gain when I got married because that is what my husband really likes, and it works a lot better. We can get dirt, food and a number of other things on our clothes and it comes out looking great. Not only does it look great it smells great and feels great too. And they have a new more concentrated detergent which means you get to use less so it will last longer :]

  • Gain is my favorite too.
  • We use All F&C for regular laundry and Rockin Green for diapers.

  • We use All or Arm & Hammer and it works for us...i'm just too cheap for tide.

  • I used to use All Free and Clear and switched to Tide Free and Clear (and the Cold water version) last fall.

I started thinking something was wrong with my washing machine because the stains weren't coming out of my kids' clothes, even with pre-treating. I bought a Clorox solution for cleaning the washer but that didn't work either.

So before I got all gung ho about getting a new washer (I really want one!) I decided to try switching detergents first.

I went back to the All Free and Clear with Oxy and it's been night and day.

I liked the Tide in the beginning - I don't know what happened there, but to answer your question about more expensive detergents, I honestly don't know.  I'd recommend comparing the ingredient list and the % of active ingredient and that should help answer your question.

I prefer a Free and Clear so that limits my options, but my mom has used Wisk and seems to like it.  I'm pretty sure that's normally cheaper than Tide and All.

  • I've been using Tide, but love the smell of Gain!

A local grocery store has a store brand called Bravo. When I'm in town I try to pick some up it smells so good.

I normally use All w/oxy and I think it does a good job. No complaints!
  • I use Tide Coldwater and it lasts FOREVER. It's very concentrated and you can get 60 loads out of a medium bottle. I am normally pretty cheap, but I don't skimp on laundry detergent :)

  • I used Tide for years and years.

Now I usually make my own, but when I'm lazy I'll use Method Free and Clear, which I do like.

My MIL uses Gain, and I LOVE the way her laundry smells, but DH and DD are both allergic to any scents, so I can't use it myself.

  • Target Brande Lavender Scent and Borax.
  • I love the way Gain smells and have used it in the past, but my skin is too sensitive and makes my eczema worse. :-(  We use All Free & Clear and I have no complaints.

  • I use Tide Free and Clear. I love it because it's not scented. I can't stand scented detergents.

  • i use purex free & clear.  it works pretty well for most of our laundry.  for DD's stuff (she's 5 and her clothes are always a mess) i add in the resolve laundry booster and it really seems to help.

  • I've had good experiences with Xtra and the Sam's Club Member's Mark brand. I hate All. Cheer is also good. But I still go for Xtra.
