Entering the UK on a second passport?

My DH has two US passports. One has his UK work visa in it. Right now it's stuck at an embassy for a visa. He really needs to travel to the UK this week. Does anyone know if he'd be okay coming in on his second passport?

Re: Entering the UK on a second passport?

  • Does he have 2 because one of them is full?

If you travel often you can get 2 b/c one can get caught up with visas.  Say you are waiting for a work visa for a work trip to China, but you still need to visa a few countries in Europe you need another PP.  However the 2nd one is only good for 2 years I think.

Neeps I'm not sure.  Is he coming here to work?  If so I would guess he needs to show the visa.  Whenever I enter they put the number of my visa next to the entry stamp.

Pages can be added so I doubt that's the case.

Every time I come into the UK they scan my passport electronically.  I don't know if it's because I'm a student, though.  I wonder if they'd catch the name on the passport, rather than the passport number?  Doubtful since there has no doubt been elevnty billion American Bob Smith's who have entered the UK.

I would probably do it.  On what grounds could they turn him away?

  • P.S. I am so jealous of his 2 passports.  Last summer I would have killed - murdered - to have two.  The stress of visas definitely took years off my life.

No, exactly what NCV said. He travels a lot so he can travel on one while getting visas in the other. I know it's also common for journalists who cover the middle east to have two - one for israel the other for everywhere else.

  • I traveled in and out of Mexico on my second passport without any problems.  I was a resident in Mexico at the time.  The second passport was issued because I was getting my UK residency visa...  My first passport has all of my visas, etc. (including the Mexican residency visa).

Anyway, I didn't have any problems, but it was Mexico - not exactly the same immigration standards as the UK Indifferent

  • I would guess that he wouldn't be allowed into the country. If he said he was here for business and didn't have a visa they'd put him on a plane back home immediately. If he said he was here for vacation and they thought he was lying they'd send him back. Maybe try contacting UK boarder contol? Do they have a website or phone number somewhere to ask? If you get the ok from someone, make sure he carries their information with him - their full name, a phone number to contact them, etc.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't think he could do that. I asked about getting back into the UK on my Israeli passport (our US passports were tied up getting our visas updated and there was a chance I'd have to get back to the states for an emergency) and it was a huge, huge no. If he's travelling here for work without a work permit, he could be banned from the UK forever if he gets a strict border control agent.

I had a vague thought I could just travel into the UK as a tourist on my Israeli passport (it's in my maiden name so it wouldn't even link up) but the risks were just too overwhelming to consider.

  • I agree with the others.  It's not the second passport that's the problem, its the lack of the proper visa.  I'd have him contact the UK border patrol and see if there's another option for him.  I don't know if they can issue him a second visa or something (although from my experience they would charge an arm and a leg for that).

  • if he is only coming over here for a visit I don't see the problem even if it is a work trip. I don't think you both live here so as long as he isn't planning to be here longer than a few wks it should be fine.

My dad comes over for work meetings and never has had a work visa.

I see everyone else's point but I agree with this - you don't live in the UK, and I would imagine he is just coming for some meetings? He doesn't need a work visa for that.

I agree with this too. If he is staying less than 3 months, then he should have no problem entering on his other passport as a tourist.

  • I have two (one's for work, one's regular).  I once was hassled b/c I didn't have the original (I had a copy) of my residency permit w/ the visa passport (it was in Madrid).  Rather than argue w/ the guy, I just took back passport #1 and gave him passport #2 w/o the visas (ie a normal tourist passport) and he let me through.

In other words by trying to do the right thing (use the visa/residency deal b/c I was traveling for work), I had a harder time than just rolling in on a tourist passport (which I wasn't).  Like I said that was Spain though.

  • A mixed bag of opinions. He just needs to be there for a week. I think he's going to try it. We'll see if he gets bounced.
