interior design question

Ladies,

If you are friends of mine on FB you have seen the fiasco that has happened in my house due to my neighbors ac unit...that being said, We are getting new kitchen floors.  We have oak cabinets, deep red walls, white appliances (that we are gradually changing to black as they need) and dark speckled countertops (not granite).  We are going to put in laminate floors....what color????

Re: interior design question

  • I have no idea how to do that and in the current state of the kitchen it would be really hard, there is stuff everywhere from all the unplanned renovations... let me see if i can find an old pic somewhere:-)

EDIT: found a picture but have no idea how to pip it

  • meh, I don't know that I'd intentionally "match" the floor to anything existing but I'd opt for lighter color over darker bc it tends to show less dirt/dust (less of a contrast to a dark color, if that makes sense).

I'd also keep in mind future reno to that floor of the house -- if you're planning to put hardwood in other areas, for example, or changing carpet -- try not to have to replace this space again.

[and I have no input on the couch question in your other post ... (Smile)]

  • we are most likely putting the same floor in the living room adjacent to the kitchen..and god help us we will not be replacing it again, this was supposed to be our 3-5 year house but we bought in nov 05 and we can't go anywhere anytime soon:( keep the suggestions coming..I'm awful at this stuff
  • We have beige laminate plank flooring in our kitchen and I hate it.  It always looks dirty and I constantly clean it.  When we gut our kitchen I'm getting slate tiles.  I wouldnt want that in the living room though.  I'd go with some sort of laminate wood flooring in a darker modern tone if it's going in the kitchen and living room.
  • I think dark brown floors would look the best if you are doing laminate. Can you afford tile? It's a little hard on your feet if you are standing there for a while, but oh does it clean up easily and look polished.
  • We don't want tile in the kitchen bc if you drop something it always breaks... And with a toddler and 2 dogs we would rather not... We may tile the bathroom and entryway though:-)
  • I would go with a earth tone color floor (maybe slate or tile look) that complaints but doesn't try to match the wood cabinets.  As a commercial interior designer, I always avoid trying to match exactly because it never matches perfectly, so just select something that is different enough so people won't look at it and think you missed the mark.
