Advice needed about removing wisdom teeth :(

I made the mistake of trying to look up how much time I'd need to take off of work to recover. That was a mistake. It sounds much more awful than I thought it would be...

One of my wisdom teeth is coming in and impacted and my dentist suggested getting all four out at once to simplify things.

How long should I expect to take off of work? I have a web-related desk job and could probably work from home for some of it. I was thinking of having it done on a Friday but what I read seems to indicate most people need more time off than that.

Anyone have any advice, experience, or comments on this?

Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Advice needed about removing wisdom teeth :(

  • well, I got all mine taken out when I was 18, so....that was 17 yrs ago! Indifferent.

I am not going to lie, it sucked. I was put under for the entire procedure (my choice). I took 3 days off of work. The first day sucked. I was in so much pain that from what I remember, I was on pain meds the entire first day. I had chipmunk cheeks for at least a week.

Some people tolerate pain more than others so take mine with a grain of salt.

  • I got my first two wisdom teeth taken out several years ago.  It suuuuuuuucked.  My dentist at the time did it herself and numbed me but didn't put me under.  NOT fun.  She did them one at a time.  I don't remember how long I was off work after that.  Not long, I think.  I switched dentists after that, though.  I though the experience was a lot more miserable than it had to be... and I was right!

The 2nd time was about 4 yrs ago.  My dentist at the time mentioned taking the remaining two out and I asked him, "Will you do it?"  He kinda laughed and said, "I don't know why some dentists do that.  No, I'll send you to an oral surgeon up the street who specializes in this kind of thing.  He'll put you out, it'll be so easy."  And it was soooooo easy!  The oral surgeon did the two in one visit.  I went in, they put me out, I woke up and they were done!  The drugs had me pretty groggy the rest of the day.  DH took care of me, I dozed in the recliner watching movies all day, ate ice cream and milkshakes and yogurt...  It was great!  Granted, I had a 4 or 5 month old baby at the time so maybe I viewed it a lot more as a vacation than other people would...  ;)   But it was so easy.  I don't remember if I was back to work the next day but I probably could have been.

Although, come to think of it, all four of my teeth were out so that may have affected how easy my recovery was...  But, overall, I found it to be a really easy experience.  I hope yours goes as well!  What did your dentist say about recovery time?  I'm sure the most extreme stuff is what gets posted on the web so try not to scare yourself too much before talking to your doc!

  • I did it on a Friday at like 2 or 3 ( left work early ) And was back on Monday. I had all four done while knocked out. No swelling or bruising. The first day is the worst, but I was fine two days later ( though still eating soft foods)

  • I had mine out about 4 years ago.  I only grew two, so it wasn't too bad.  One was impacted and had to be cut out, one was pulled.  I took the pain meds religiously and iced on and off for 30 minute intervals religiously also.  I didn't have any pain or swelling.  Literally, as soon as I woke from surgery, the dental assistant was shoving vicodin in my hands.  I was knocked out the whole time because my mouth is so small that the oral surgeon was afraid I would panic if I saw the instruments needed to keep my mouth open enough, lol.  Yikes.  But my experience was a fine one, for what it was.  I had it done on a Friday morning, and it took the weekend for me to feel "right" enough for work/school.

  • Everyone has a vastly different experience with their wisdom teeth. I got mine out when I was 16 and it wasn't that bad. I got them out on a Monday morning and they put me under. By Wednesday night I was off the Vicodin and taking only Advil, and by Thursday I was ready to go back to marching band camp (lol).

This was my experience.  No problem at all.

My sister got hers out (by the same person) and she was throwing up on the car drive home and it took her about 3 days to recover then she was fine.

Everyone is different and of course they always put the worst case scenarios out there.

Isn't this the normal experience? It would have been mine if not for a miscommunication with the surgeon because of my problems with antibiotics that led to the wrong antibiotic and an infection. Otherwise it would have been a short recovery.

  • I had my two uppers removed maybe 3-4 years ago and I didn't think it was that bad. I had a full prescription of vicodin but only used 2-3 of them total (to help me fall asleep). I brought two small ice packs with me for immediate relief during the car ride home and I think that helped with some of the swelling. The only PITA was using the small syringe to rinse out the area and remember not to brush too heavily back there or bleeing would ensue. I think I did mine on a Thursday or Friday and was back to work that following Monday.

  • I took 2 days off of work following the surgery and really should have taken 4 or 5. I was completely knocked out and pretty much did nothing but sleep for the first day home. My boss (at the time) had his removed while he was in college and went to his classes afterwards. Everyone's a little different.

ETA: I worked retail and was lifting/stacking big items and unloading crates so it's a little different than now. Also, I did have swelling for about a week and some bruising but no complications.

  • I gave a quick response on Google+ but to expand: I had all four of mine out when I was 16. I recovered pretty quickly but you never know how your body will react. If it were me, I'd probably plan to take 3 days off and see how you feel - take more if you need it.

I was pretty lucky though and had very minimal pain - I only took the serious pain drugs (vicodin and valium) the first day and only about half of each of the doses I was allowed to take. By the second day, I was fine with just advil. By the fourth day, I was eating semi solid things like mashed potatoes and very very soft vegetables (like very cooked zucchini, etc.)

The worst part of it for me was just how loopy anesthesia makes me. I needed help walking back to the car when I woke up (they put me under completely during the procedure), and then I cried for no apparent reason in the car. I remember my mom asking me what was wrong, and was I crying because I was in pain. I said no - I was not in pain. I had no idea why I was crying. Just crazy I guess! And then I did vomit once later that morning but that's it. My body just doesn't respond well to those drugs.

I also had mine out on a Friday morning; my only caution about that is to make sure you have a way to contact your actual dentist/oral hygenist quickly over the weekend if you have a problem. We had a nightmare scenario with my husband's old (idiotic) dentist when DH had his wisdom teeth out about five years ago.The dentist insisted DH didn't need any pain pills other than Advil... I found this really strange but then again, they also just numbed up his mouth and took the teeth out. It all seemed kind of half-assed to me.

Of course, once the anesthisia wore off, he was in terrible pain. We tried calling the dentist's answering service to get in touch with him and get a prescription for something stronger, and they forgot to the turn their answering service on... We ended up at Kaiser's minor injury clinic late at night begging the doctor there for some pain meds - I thought we were going to get kicked out for trying to score painkillers like a couple of drug addicts. Thankfully we had a really understanding doctor and he took one look in DH's mouth and wrote out the prescription. It was awful though and I was soooo pissed at that dentist. I wouldn't let DH go there any more after that even though it was his childhood dentist.

Anyway - lesson is, make sure they explain how to get a hold of someone over the weekend if there's a problem.

  • What CarFar and some of the others described is the norm. Mine was far from it and it took me two weeks to recover and I lost about 12lbs. Best prom diet ever, haha. Anyways mine was very traumatic and I won't tell you about it, however I will tell you if I didn't have a small mouth and if my top 2 teeth were where they were suppose to be and not up near my eye sockets I would have had the same recovery as everyone else.

That said you'll be just fine! Just make sure you have a good ice pack and lots of soft foods at home.

  • I agree with the advice to go to an oral surgeon. Some dentists try to do this in house and really don't have the instruments and ability to do anything if the issue is greater than a simple extraction.

I got my wisdom teeth out about 7 years ago with a rock star oral surgeon in dub creek. Had the appt on Friday, followed all the orders (which essentially were to knock yourself out with pain pills and rinse every few hours) and was back at work on Monday. There was a lot of swelling but it wasn't as bad as I had expected.

  • Thanks for the input! I have a tiny mouth and the top one is impacted, so I'm wondering if that will complicate things. I am def going to an oral surgeon and, come hell or high water, I'm making him put me under. ;)

Sounds like I'll just tell my boss when I'm getting it done on a Friday and let him know I may need off or work from home a few days the following week, depending.

NOT looking forward to it though!! :X

  • Good Luck! Let me know if you need a referral for a good Oral Surgeon, I work with tons of them in the Bay Area and know of some really great ones (and some bad).

I think if you go to an oral surgeon the protocol is to put you under, which is definitely necessary.

  • I got mine out in Sept 2009, so I remember it pretty well. I had them out on a Thursday and by the following Tuesday I was still in a good amount of pain. I also had a hematoma in my loswer jaw, so that didn't help matters (felt like I had a golf ball in my cheek/jaw). Working from home might not be a bad idea, but I would get as much rest as possible before you plan to do so. I also recommend being completely out. Best decision I ever made.
