BCP Question (maybe TMI, sorry)

I've been on the same BCP for about 9 months. I had enough left to get through the rest of my time here, but it was in my purse that was stolen so all of a sudden, mid pack I've stopped taking it. It's not a huge deal because, with H back in the US, it's not like I really need it.

However, about 3 days after I took my last pill, my period started (about 1.5 weeks earlier than expected) and it's been really bad.  Usually my periods (on or off the pill) are about 3-4 days and REALLY light.  It's now been 4 days, really heavy and really painful, like sick-to-my-stomach painful.  I'm sure it's not a big deal but I've never had this before when going off the pill or switching.  Is this normal?

Re: BCP Question (maybe TMI, sorry)

  • I had the worst period ever when I first stopped by BP. I would think it's just your body freaking out a bit since you stopped mid-cycle, which is usually not how it would work. I'm not an expert though so if you're concerned, I would get it checked out. Personally, I think it sounds totally normal though.

  • I think it is normal but I would check with a Dr. about the pain. Whenever I stopped mid-cycle, I would get my period for like over a month. I am not saying that is going to happen to you, but I think it is normal to have your period go a bit crazy.

  • I agree it sounds pretty normal for going off the pill.  The sudden hormone shock probably just made your body freak out.  I had some heavy and irregular periods the first few months of BCP.

Definitely get checked out by a doctor though if you are worried.  GL!

Agh!  I hope that doesn't happen!

  • Okay thanks for your help everyone.  I think I'll wait a couple more days and see if things change, and if not I'll see a doctor.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. If you stop mid pack you will get your period shortly after that (just like you do when you stop the hormonal pills after 3 weeks and switch to the week of non hormonal pills). Why it is heavy I'm not sure but likely due to stopping earlier than normal and your body being confused. If you were my patient (I'm a PA) and with the info I have I would only check a pregnancy test to be on the safe side and if that was negative I would recommend that you give it a couple of months (and by that time you'll probably be back in the US if I remember right). Our bodies do weird things sometimes for no partifcular reason. Hope it mellows out for you soon though. Take some ibuprofen for the cramping (provided you have that available)

  • Did you have horrendous periods before you went on BCP?  I know BCP makes periods easier, so I wouldn't be concerned if your periods before were (even slightly) bad.
