What do you think about this type of relationship? It seems that it is a growing trend for young women to seek out older men, not only to wine and dine them, but to pay for college.

I am not quite sure how I feel about this. I saw an episode about this the other day on True Life: I'm a Sugar Baby (MTV). The girls who participated in the program said that they were not having sex with the men but still expected them to buy them stuff. They said that the men were paying for their company and being able to show them off in public.

Yes! I was like WTF?!! when MIL told me that. I have no idea where she went, all I know is that they took a loan out for absolutely everything from tuition to meals to rent to all new gadgets for school. I haven't met the BF, he seems pretty cute, I think he's from Miami. So Spanish looking, dark eyes, hair etc. She is a very good looking girl too, so I can see why he's attracted to her.
I would feel gross getting significant gifts or money from someone if I didn't care for them a certain way. I mean, I guess if the guy wanted to provide a scholarship and people submitted an essay and I won and could spend the money as I please, I would be ok with it.
I was grossed out at my old job when my boss spent a ton of money for an a-list celebrity to come to an event we hosted and that was just the actresses regular appearance fee.

I definitely created an account on sugardaddie.com to check out these men. Turns out you have to pay for most of the services so I didn't see THAT much but what I did see - they want sex they don't want companionship. They want a trophy girlfriend who will sleep with them and in return, the woman gets gifts, allowances, nights out on the town, etc.
IMO it is not prostitution. It is a relationship. A fucked up relationship but still a relationship.

Um, I think your MIL may be exaggerating. Generally schools have to enforce a "reasonable" cost of living lending amount. Just as a point of reference, I could only borrow up to $50k a year to cover tuition, books, apartment and food while attending law school in Boston. My little brother had the same sort of limit on his loans while an undergrad at a college in Boston as well. The only person I've ever met who was able to take out more than that per year went to Northwestern, and got screwed over thanks to unlimited school-financed loans or something of that sort. I also can't imagine a private lending company giving her $150k just like that. We're not talking about a mortgage here.
Anyway, not to get completely off topic, but I think maybe MIL is being a bit melodramatic about SIL's loans. I wouldn't doubt you if you said she'd managed to accumulate $50k to $80k, but $150k? Did they buy a condo and/or a BMW on credit for her?

Not all of it was tuition loans. They took out other loans for a car, clothing and a top of the line computer for her graphic design degree. Top that off with a really expensive school and you have $150k in debt. She's always been a spoiled princess and gets whatever she wants. Her brother is a douchecanoe as well. We caught him stealing a bottle of wine from MIL's house when he was 13. WTF indeed.
