Burt and Ernie

This whole Burt and Ernie thing is really annoying me. Now don't get me wrong it has nothing to do with if they are gay or not. Anyone that knows me IRL knows I am very pro gay rights. Its the fact that they are puppets on a kids show...I mean seriously. Do puppets really need to get married on a kids show?? And I get that they want to show kids to accept everyone but really that should come from the parents. ..

  • What!  Did they get married to each other?

There's argument that they should be married on the show...or something like that.

I agree, though...I am pretty open and pro rights, but this is just plain silly. I mean, it's toddlers we're talking about...they don't care or know any better anyway. Marrying Bert and Ernie might just be confusing for a 3 year old.

  • This is stupid.  I'm sorry.  I'm tired of hearing all the changes they have made on Sesame Street...Cookie monster eating veggies, Oscar the Grouch.  Just leave the show as it was.  There is nothing wrong with two guys just living together as roommates...it happens all the time.

Couldn't one argue that by them getting married now you are insinuating that if two individuals of the same sex live together they must be gay and thus married?

  • Why can't they just be friends that like to spend time together?   No need to sexualize kids shows.
  • Honestly, when I was growing up, I thought they were brothers. lol

  • I always thought they were best friends or brothers.

I agree - why the need to sexualize/label it? No other character is married, are they? I guess I havent seen it in a while.

And really, if your kid is learning that veggies are good from sesame street, and not from you, your child is watching too much tv. I grew up watching it, and I'm not all 'veggies are bad, I'm only eating cookies' - - has parenting got that lazy and come to this??

I think people will make a mountain out of a molehill over the stupidist things. Leave it as it is. The characters dont need to be deemed gay or straight, ect.....

I am still trying to figure out which are male/female on the show Yo Gabba gabba. Is tootie a boy or a girl?

Foofa and Tootie are girls.  Although, interestingly enough, only Muno has a guy in the costume.  The others are acted by women, and most are voiced by someone other than the actor in the costume.

I had some wiki time since my children were up at 5:15 today.  We watched three episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba on my lap while I tried to fall back asleep.  Mother of the Year!

  • I don't think it's necessary for Bert and Ernie to marry simply because they don't show other married couples regularly.  We watch SS more than any other show and I can remember one where they showed Elmo staying the night at Maria and her husband's house....that's the only time I've seen marriage or anything even referenced.  None of the other puppets are married. Hell, they are portrayed as children themselves.

SS does a great job of introducing kids to all aspects of life and differences among people so it's natural that this would be the next avenue I guess.  IMO, if SS is going to introduce a gay couple they need to have human characters and it wouldn't have to be a consistent thing.  Like maybe Chris' brother and partner come to SS for the day.....something like that.

My kid will grow up knowing some kids have two moms and some have two dads (or one of each, one or the other, etc) so it doesn't really bother me.  I just don't see the need for it to be Bert and Ernie since, to me, they are kids.
