mattresses

We are hopefully buying a new mattress this weekend--yay for the state sales tax holiday in MA! We did some research and tested out a TON. At first we both thought we wanted a plush mattress, actually the one I LOVED was a super plush pillow top. But the woman at one of the stores told us that since DH is a stomach sleeper (at least he claims to be, I think he sleeps in many different ways) that it would be really bad for his back. She also pointed out that a mattress will soften up as time passes. So I think we have settled on a "plush-firm" pillow top from the Simmons beautyrest elite line.

We've never bought a mattress before, the one we have was a hand-me down, so I feel so overwhelmed with the whole thing, and after a while they all felt the same to me! So I guess I'm wondering what type of mattress you all have (if you know) and if you are happy with it. Or even how you even determined what was the best mattress for you. I mean, you lay on it for a few minutes and it feels great then...

The nice thing is that most stores do offer an exchange period, and truthfully, anything is better than what we have now!

Re: mattresses

  • We got ours when we were moving in together and it was an incredibly unscientific pick - we went for the next-to-cheapest ones. They had two of that model - one firm and one plush. We laid on both, decided the plush was nicer and went with that. We were probably there for 10 minutes total. It's been just fine.

For what it's worth, I'm a stomach sleeper and I haven't had any sort of back problems from it being plush.

  • I have a pillow-top, but it has a memory foam pad on top. DH weights quiet a bit more than I do and that caused the mattress to dip - this hurt my back like crazy because my body was constantly trying to compensate to keep me in the right position. The memory foam has been great for keeping the bed 'balanced'

  • Went to check out my mattress - It's a Sealy Posturepedic Harlan Plush.  I bought it about 8 years ago when I moved into my first apartment.  My mom went with me to the store.  I don't remember how many mattresses I tried or how I decided on that one.  Guess it was just comfortable for me.  I sleep on my back.  I probably paid $500ish, but there were so many times over the years that I felt like it was totally worth it.  On those long days when I'd come home super tired (esp after teaching kindergarten or waitressing) I'd be so thankful for my bed.

  • We have a serta with a pillow top. I sleep on my belly too and I have never had a problem with it. As far as I can tell, it hasn't changed since we got it two years ago. I LOVE our matress! I Love our pillow top and would buy it every time. The only bad part is that the pillow top is on one side. Spend the extra money and buy the one with the pillow top on both sides or else you can't flip it.
  • I have the plush firm beautyrest, LOVE IT. The sales lady is correct though that it gets softer over time. Ours is already almost too soft for DH's liking and we haven't even had it a year. But it's just how I like it so I'm not complaining.

  • We have a Serta - Vera Wang Pillow top. We bought this one when we went mattress shopping before we got married and both really like it! It's soft, but has just the right amount of firmness and gives a lot of support!

Go to a mattress store and they will ask you what you are used too, or prefer then they will point you in the right direction and you can try out a bunch of mattress to see what is the right fit for you! Worked well for us. Good Luck Smile

  • MIL got us our current mattress as a wedding gift and although I appreciate the gesture, I hate our mattress. It's WAY too firm. We have actually discussed buying a pillowtop mattress pad for it because it's like sleeping on a rock.

Our next mattress (not for a while yet) will be a sleep number or tempurpedic bed.

  • We have the Sleep-to-Live Series 200 Mattress from Sleepys.  We have it in half blue (my side) and half red (DH's side).  We bought this with our tax return last year so we did splurge a bit, but it is one of the best purchases that we have ever made.  I highly recommend this mattress!

  • thanks girls! I'm pretty sure we are going to go with the one I mentioned, I was just curious as to what others had and I was glad to hear that someone has the one we are thinking about!
