Are you running RnR chicago 1/2 marathon this weekend?
My dads running it because he'll be there on business - I'm so jealous!!
If you're not running there may be some awesome opportunities for spectating!
Re: *hannah*
Yea, I am now!
I wasn't going to originally. My dad, bro and SIL signed up for it (will be dad and bro's first half). Then I debated signing up a few weeks ago, but decided that $120 wasn't worth it. Last week my brother decided to that with travel for work and shin splints, he didn't want to do it anymore; so I'm using his race number.
I'm so torn on if I try to beat my time from last year or even try to break 2 hrs. Last year, my first, I ran 2hr15min. With my training for the full, I feel like I should definitely be able to break that (especially since I probably walked a mile total btwn miles 10 and 13.1 in the half).
I'd love to break 2 hours, which is 9.16 mi/min pace. I like to think that I usually run btwn 9 and 9:30 pace for long runs. I ran 7.1mi and Wed and including a water break and two 30sec walks I was at 9.01mi/min pace....so I think it could be a lofty goal.

That's awesome you're running it!!!
Now I'm super jealous and wish I could have made the trip to do it!
Hmmm with those times it's going to be close to 2 hours for sure!!! It may end up coming down to if it's a good running day or not
Hopefully the weather will be nice. Maybe conserve some energy the first half so you can pick up the speed in the second half of it if you need to? I know for me miles 10-13 are always my slowest, so it's always my goal to have negative splits.
Good luck with it, let us know how you did!!!

True! Either way, I think I should be able to walk less than I did last year, which is good.
It's supposed to be a gorgeous day last I looked, although now I see rain showers, ick. It's been about 65 with low humidity around 6:30am (race time) the past couple days, so that'd be perfect!
I'm still debating when I want to take my energy sources (Clif Shots) and if I want to do one or two. Any advice? I'm debating on either 2 (one at 1 hr and one at 1hr30min) or 1 (around 1hr 15min)

Ohhh hopefully the rain holds out but if not, I ran the cleveland half in rain and it actually wasn't too bad. It made it really cool and the temperature was my ideal running weather. The only unintentional side effect was that I had chafing on my arms because my short sleeved shirt had like tight arm holes. I didn't notice until I took it off though - it didn't bother me during the race. The professional race pictures sucked though, haha. And they didn't have space blankets so I froze walking back to the hotel. If it looks like rain get a few disposable rain ponchos and wear one at the start and then throw it out, and have one in your gear check for walking back to your car afterwards in case they don't have space blankets.
I usually only need to take one thing of fuel (I use the clif shot gels and only eat about half). I take it around mile 7ish, right before I know there's a water station coming up so I can have water after I eat it.
How have you been fueling for your training runs? If you usually do two before 13 miles I would stick with the same thing.

Wow, that would be miserable! Is wasn't your first half was it?
It was raining on Monday when I did a 4mi run. I was going to do the treadmill but said screw it and just ran in the rain. It honestly was one of the most peaceful runs I think I've ever had! I loved it.
Well, I've been kind of wonky with fuel. On my 12.8mi run I did take two but last week for 14.4mi I only did one. Although for both I do take one right before my run. I've realized it really helps to have that pre-race one have the 1/2shot caff since my body is used to coffee in the morning anyways.
Ooo girl! "Talking" with you is getting me excited!! I wish you were running to and we could have the chance to meet!

No it wasn't my first, thank god. That would have been depressing!
Yea seriously, I think running in the rain is AMAZING. Its always really serene. And during the race I hardly noticed it. Plus when you're running that far you sweat a lot so it just kind of mixed together, haha.
I take a few clif margarita shot block the night before too, I've realized I need the extra salt that they provide. But I can't take that kind during a race or I get major cramping.
Hmm, you could always take two with you, maybe take one around 5 miles in if you feel you need it? otherwise wait until the half way point or a little past to take it? Sometimes you just need them for the mental aspect too (I always carry 2 just in case), so it can't hurt to take two with you and base it on how you feel.
I know! I'm excited for you!! That would have been awesome if I had planned to do it because we totally could have met up. When my dad told me he signed up for it a few weeks ago I thought about it for about a minute until I realized I have a BParty and Shower this weekend that I can't exactly skip out on
Otherwise I probably would have just paid for the flights to do it. Chicago seems like an amazing city to run a race in.
good luck!!!!

What made you decide you need the extra salt? Do you have face crusties? I have yet to try the margarita. Hopefully they'll have samples at the packet pick-up expo!
I think that's a good idea, to bring two. I'll be wearing my trusty SpiBelt you rec'd and have plenty of room! :O)
I LOVE Chicago downtown road races. It's just inspiring in itself to me since I'm so used to seeing the streets filled with traffic, I always motivate myself my thinking "wow, they closed down the streets just for me to run". lol.
Thanks!!

During the first race I ran I felt really super dizzy and I had hydrated properly before and during. And yes, my sweat is super salty. Before that I had taken the margarita blocks during training runs and was fine, but during the race I had super bad cramping (could have been related to first-timer nerves too). So my mom talked to some of her coworkers that do marathons and they said they pre-load the salt the night before to avoid cramping. So I started doing that with my second half and had no issues during that race with dizziness or cramping (besides the normal stuff haha) and it worked during my third too so I'm just sticking with it since it works.
Yay SpiBelts rock!
Have fun!!!!
