Ever been to Tampa?

We're going to Tampa Thanksgiving morning (eeeeeeeearly...I'm already dreading it) and coming back late on Monday.  Any must-see things or fabulous places to eat?

I know most of one day will be spent at the Lowry Park Zoo because SIL works there.  And I'm guessing we'll hit up the beach.

(Is there a Florida board?  I'll check and cross post over there.)

Thanks! :-)

Re: Ever been to Tampa?

  • I moved here from Tampa.  I saw you got some good recs on RE. All of those were good except I would avoid the Big Cat Sanctuary.  I hated that place.  It felt very "Swamp People" to me.

Clearwater beach is pretty and close.

    We're kind of going out.
  • I worked for a winter in Sarasota, which is about 45 minutes from Tampa. They have beautiful beaches there, I especially would recommend Lido Beach, going to the restaurant called 'The Sandbar' on Anna Maria Island, and/or checking out Longboat Key if you're up for the drive.
  • My grandparents leave about 20 minutes outside of Tampa, so I used to go there all the time when I was younger.

Ditto the rec for Anna Maria Island :)  And if you're going to a beach- I definitely recommend Clearwater Beach. (Assuming you're ok with more of a 'family' environment and not the all-out night life kind of vibe.)

Find somewhere to see the manatees, too!

If you'll have a car, I'd recommend the St Pete Pier (http://www.stpetepier.com/)(maybe 15-20 minutes from Tampa?)  That's in St. Petersberg... which would get you closer to Clearwater Beach, too.

  • I've been to St. Pete Beach. It was lovely. I don't remember the name of the place, but there was a restaurant (it might have been in St. Pete, not St. Pete Beach) that was known for their grouper sandwiches. It was a really fun place.

  • One word: Bern's.

Its my favorite restaurant in the whole entire world. Its not cheap, but DAMN is it worth it!! My bro used to live in Tampa, and we spent a couple of Christmases there. We went to Bern's for our x-mas eve dinner. I can still taste their fingerling potatoes and Chicken Gert....mmmmm
