Newbie with a couple of cleaning questions

First of all HI!

My husband and I recently purchased a house. In our previous house we did not have hardwood floors. Our new house does. I was wondering what's the best mop and cleaning supplies to use to clean/mop the hardwood floors.

We now have a stainless steel refrigerator. What is the best thing to wipe down the front of the refrigerator with to get rid of finger prints.

Thanks!

  • I have all stainless appliances, and I use a stainless steel cleaner. I think it's called Simply Stainless... My mom uses something different too, both work very good.

Regarding your wood floors, I use a Bella mop. It is a chemical free mop head, meaning you don't have to add anything if you don't want to. When I wash our wood floors however, I use Murphy's Oil Soap. Cleans the floors and makes them shine. Whatever you do, make sure you don't over do it with the water and wipe after washing with a clean dry towel to soak up any left over water. If you have any hard wood surfaces like banisters, railings, tables, etc. Liquid Gold works wonders. Spray it on, let it sink into the wood then wipe away with a cloth.

  • I can't help with the stainless steel, but I learned the hard way, over about 9 months, how to care for wood floors. (household wear: 2 people, 2 big dogs and 2 cats).

Definitely use Murphy's Oil Soap once in a while or something like it, but your primary go to is going to be a mixture of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, in a spray bottle.

We have a "swiffer" type thingie that has microfiber pads that I can spray the solution in the about 3x3 foot area in front of me, mop it, and then move on to the next area.  If you have ceiling fans, use those but box fans work well too.

*** part of "the hard way" being that I'd do a room at a time, and not consider that the dog fur from the next room over would be blown onto the wet clean floor courtesy of the box fan.

The best tool you can arm yourself with when it comes to earning your clean hardwood floors is a good sense of humor, because every house's story and flooring is different, and it will take whatever you find is best to make your floors shine.

  • Wierd, i was told to NEVER use Murphys Oil Soap on your hardwood. I use vinegar and water with the bona mop. No streaks, no wierd filmy residue.

  • Don't use Murphy's on your hw floors!  It leaves a wax residue that can cause major problems down the road if you want to have your floors refinished or screened.

I love Bona.  I use the microfiber mop and the spray.  It is awesome.

  • Steam mop. However, our current house has really bad hardwood floors. The house we are moving into has recently redone HW floors so I might have to change that. Not sure it's good for the long term.

  • I use "Bar Keeper's Friend" on all my stainless steel.  You can get it at Bed, bath and Beyond or Home Depot in a gold canister.  It makes everything shine!
  • Pledge multisurface spray is fantastic for stainless steel appliances and we use the Bona mop system on our HW floors. basically it's a microfiber dry and wet mop and a spray and you just spray and mop as you go.
