DH is out of town for the week and one of the projects I am trying desperately trying to accomplish while he's gone is to organize all of the theatre supplies we accumulated through the two shows I directed this year. Everything is currently piled in our extra room on the floor or on the bed. If we had a closet in there, I'd feel great about putting everything in boxes and shutting the doors. But there isn't a closet so I'm trying to think of some creative and inexpensive options for organizing and storing everything.
Do you have any storage areas in your home that you are proud of and would you be willing to share some pictures or descriptions with me? OR have you seen any good blogs/websites/magazines with good ideas? Anything is much appreciated at this point... I have a lot of brainstorming to do today so I can hopefully knock the project out on Wednesday when I'm off work.
Re: Storage Ideas?
We got a storage thing for our wedding that was 9 cubby holes and you can get canvas bins for the holes. The bins are great for "messy" items and we left some open for DVDs and things that don't look so bad out in the open.
This is a super blurry picture, but it gives you the idea. Here's the link to Target's website: http://www.target.com/ClosetMaid-Cubeicals-Cube-Organizer-Espresso/dp/B001UU0NJW
If it's larger stuff, can you fit a chest in the room?
It's enough stuff to fill my little old Honda Civic. Some of it is small stuff and some big and bulky (a big rubbermaid tub full of carpet samples we use backstage and a large case of microphone equipment). I like the idea of the cubes -- does anyone know if you can mount that on the wall? It looks like it comes with mounting hardware but I don't know if that's just to keep it from falling over or if it's strong enough to hold it on. If it can be mounted, I think I can just fit the tub and case at the foot of the bed in the room (it's not a long room so they'd be hidden that way) and maybe I could mount the cubes above them?

I got wire "metro" style shelves from Target for our basement storage. Each shelf holds 250 pounds so you can pack a LOT of stuff on them. I just have rubbermaid totes on them for the most part. You can easily clip fabric over them to hide them. Ikea has good shelving options too.
In our kitchen, I needed just a couple regular shelf lengths and we ended up buying pre-bullnosed stair treads from the hardware store and some shelf brackets that were more decorative. I stained the shelves and you'd never know they were originally meant to go on the steps! They look great and are much MUCH more durable than the laminated particle board ones you can get in the stores. Those tend to bend under any sort of weight or in the presence of moisture.
