Re: Fascinating Picture Essay

  • This is really interesting and very sad but not at the same time... I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but quite a few of the kids that they show are part of tribes who have chosen to live like that for thousands of years. We can say that it isn't fair that they don't get to live like the kid in New York, but some of those more 'impoverished' kids could very well be just has happy and well taken care of as him. God knows Wyatt won't ever be that well off, but he'll be just as happy, if not more. I think the one flaw in their study is that they don't have anything written about how the kids feel about their situation.

  • I was more shocked by the kids who had SO much stuff than the ones who were poor...I expected the poverty KIWM? The first one especially.

  • I too was shocked by the first one! It does say that her mother makes her dresses, but she still has a ton of toys in that room. The one that really saddened me was the child in Nepal, it says she has been working at the local granite quarry since the age of 3.

  • Oh, good.  Now people think that people in KY either live in trailers or deer stands.

The Harlan Co. KY picture is interesting because I know a good percentage of our students live in those exact situations.  I drive by so many run down homes and it breaks my heart to get behind a bus and see kids being dropped of at houses that you would just think were unlivable.

The kid from NY's room looked so weird.  Like a Bed & Breakfast room instead of one in an affluent NYC condo.

  • I wonder how they decided on which pictures to include in that sampling. Europe and South/Central America seemed quite under-represented. And what about Australia? Russia? Both seem big to overlook.

I agree with Kate, I was wondering where the European countries were. There didn't seem to be much of an average representation of American middle class (could have been shown in a different country too). Just both extremes.

It was definitely the richy riches that made me go woah (like the girl who is in a club that aspires to look like dolls???). The poverty was expected, but still sad.

  • wow very interesting.

I think this was only a sampling though, I'm sure the actual book represents more of the world that was left out.
