Snow Clothes

Okay, so I know that some of you live in an area where is snows, and I have some questions about snow clothes and gear.  Hubs and I are moving from CA to MI and I really have no idea about snow clothes.  Our baby is due mid November and I don't plan on leaving the house often or going out much in the winter with the baby.  Do you think I could get by the winter months with just a jacket?  Do I need some boots too?  Gloves?  We literally have no snow gear at all, just lightweight rain jackets and sweatshirts.  Where do you shop where the quality is good and the price is right?  Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: Snow Clothes

  • Your first couple of winters you are going to freeze your arse off!! Northface is my fav :-) I can get by off a lightweight jacket and then I have a heavier one for when we are outside all day. I wear flip flops in 2 feet of snow though so take the lightweight jacket with a grain of salt.  Gloves yes, scarf yes, boots yes, there will be snow and lots of it your tennis shoes will not keep your feet warm or dry. Get a snuggle cover for baby's carseat, it's unsafe and hard to get a baby in snowsuit in a carseat.
  • DEFINITELY get snow boots. Come winter time, I pretty much live in them. Idk how icy it gets in MI, but here (upstate NY), it gets pretty damn icy, so I made sure my boots have a lot of traction. I'd also get a good winter jacket.

I have an old version of these: http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/21685W/0/Womens/Whiteout-Mid-Waterproof?dimensions=0 that I got from an outlet for cheap.

    I also have a Northface tri-climate jacket that I wear a lot.

If you're like me, gloves will be a godsend, especially if you're going to be driving a car that was left outside. Even after warming up my car, my steering wheel still feels cold.

  • Ditto on the Northface.  I have a Hy-Vent jacket that I love for really cold days and snowboarding.  I have several mid-weight fleeces and a soft shell windstopper jacket from Northface too that I switch between on sort-of cold days.  I also have one cute tan peacoat for days when I want to look a little less like a slob. :-)

Definitely, definitely need gloves.  For those, I tend to go cheap and get them at Target or somewhere like that.  Unless you're going to be digging in snow, those should be fine.  Usually you can find cute hat/mitten/scarf sets at Target for cheap.

I dunno about the boots.  I'm like Jessie and wear my flip flops year round. :-)

  • Okay, I'm in CA, but used to live where it snowed.  I love my Sorel snow boots, and I got them on eBay for super cheap!

Ditto Jessie on North Face.  I've been trolling eBay for a long down jacket...just looking there and hoping for cheap because I'd only use it on our visits to PA.

  • please for the love of god, get this for your baby.  this is the cutest winter thing for a baby i have ever seen:

I think if you dont plan on going out much you dont need super serious boots, as long as you have uggs.  but if you plan on doing ANYTHING in the snow, you will need real boots.  and you need a jacket, i have this:

i also have 2 ski parkas but the long northface is what i mostly wear in the winter.

you will also need gloves, mittens, hats, and a scarf.

    good luck!

  • best place is to buy all the things you will need (although pricey) will be REI.  if there is an EMS in michigan (dont think there is) then EMS is good too.  googling REI for winter ideas.  Patagonia and Burton also makes fashionable winter clothes.
  • WOW!  Thanks ladies!  Now I get to look through things and shop!  I did get one of the fleece/suede car seat covers to help protect the baby.  I'm a wuss when it comes to cold and although I would love to wear flip flops I think I should get some snow boots.  We're going be in the Northern peninsula of MI, and from what i'm reading its not too icy, just tons and tons of snow.  I'm thinking I wont be doing much this winter, just because of the new baby, and I don't know how to/what to do in the snow.  It's going to be a major adjustment.

Shauni- I love the bunting bag... so cute!

  • I know everyone is recommending Northface, but I am going to throw another brand out there... Columbia. I love mine in that it has layers, I can use the fleecy inside layer on chilly days, the outer layer for rainy days, and put them together when it is COLD. I also have a couple cute wool peacoat type ones that I wear when I want to look "nice".

Boots are a really good idea, especially in the UP. lots of snow. and I mean LOTS. When we get more than about 12" at once stuff shuts down, but that's not always true in the UP, they are a little better prepared I believe. Enjoy!

  • Hilary- If you happen to come down to the Bay Area before your move, there's an amazing kick butt Northface outlet in Berkeley off of 4th St. I go there to get my jackets for skiing and such. If you can't find it there, there's an REI about half a mile away. :)
