Any Quebec nesties?

Hi! Just wondering if there is anyone else on here from Quebec. I moved up here from the States for H (he's a born and bred Quebecer) in 2010. I'm not too far from the border in the Eastern Townships. :)

Re: Any Quebec nesties?

  • Yes. I just moved to Quebec City in January for my husband's job. How is your French and how do you like Quebec?

  • Hi!  I'm not a Quebec person.  Hope you enjoy the board - let us know a bit more about your story.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • I don't post often, but another Quebec nestie here. I live in Montreal. Welcome!
  • I'm in Montreal, but I'm from the Eastern Townships...near Cowansville.

Make sure you hit up Brome Fair over Labour Day week-end, always a blast.

  • I'm not in Quebec, but my family is from there ( I'm a canuck myself ) but I'm so surprised at the number of IN's in Quebec! You all should show up around the board more often!

I moved up here a little over a year ago, and at the time I spoke about 3 words of French. My husband is francophone though (bilingual now), so he encouraged me to take the first few months and focus on learning French. I'm not perfectly fluent yet, but I have no trouble holding conversations in French, watching French tv, etc. I apparently have a bit of a talent for languages that I never realized before moving here.

I like Quebec so far, though there are times when I miss home. I get very annoyed by the anti-immigrant attitude that a lot of Quebecers seem to hold. I also find the low pay and the high taxes rather frustrating. Generally though I find the people very friendly (for people who don't like immigrants they're actually very welcoming on an individual level), the surroundings are beautiful, and the culture is quite fun. Plus, I have to love a place that values cheese so highly. I must say that I could stand for winter to be a couple of months shorter though, that's for sure.

How is Quebec City? I've visited, but that's about it. My husband has told me in the past that it's very francophone, and that most anglophones don't fair well there. He told me he's never wanted to live there, but especially not after marrying an anglophone. It's not too bad for anglophones here in the Townships, and in fact there are a number of large anglophone communities still. Necessary to learn French for work, but you can get by without it otherwise. I hear that's not the case in Quebec City.

My story? Oh dear. ;) I'll try to keep it brief.

My family vacationed up in the Eastern Townships for about a 10 yr period of my childhood. My mom used to vacation here when she was a child, and then we would come visit her friend (the daughter of the owners of the hotel where she stayed) and stay with her and her husband (literally across the street from where my mom spent her summers). During that time my brothers and I made our own friends in the area.

Fall of 2009 I took a trip with my mom to visit her friend up here. While here I went to a dinner party at one of my friend's places. I ended up meeting my now-husband that night. We spent the next 5 days together, then after Thanksgiving I flew back to spend December with him. After Christmas I moved back to the States to start a job I had lined up before meeting H. We did long distance for about 4 mths, then H asked me to move in with him permanently. I left my job and moved up here with the intention of finding a job and getting a work visa. That plan fell through so instead I focused on learning French. We got married in Nov. 2010, exactly 1 yr after meeting in a small civil ceremony so we could start the immigration paper work. This past July we had a large religious ceremony here in the Townships with friends and family in attendance.

That's about the long and short of it. Now I can speak French and have found work, so I feel more at home here. I like it up here, but I definitely miss home at times. :)

  • Fun to see that there are a few of us on here from QC! Thanks for the welcome! :)

Indeed! I didn't realize there were a handful of us here. And total thumbs up from me on the comment about a culture that appreciates cheese lol.
