Talk to me about your bed linens

I am tired of our master bedroom bed linens. I got a beautiful huge comforter set but it is SO warm we can never sleep under the covers. So then I got a thin bedspread which is what is used all but 2 weeks out of the year.  The rest of the time the huge (like 2-3 feet tall when folded but not squished down) comforter is in the way at the foot of the bed, off to the side, etc.

I want to get a nice decorative bed covering that is not super plush thick but still pretty.  The only alternatives I have found are very country looking quilts.  I don't want that look either.  Where do you guys shop for your bedspreads/duvet covers?

And would you think it really ridiculous if you saw a duvet cover on a bed with no duvet inside?  That is sort of the level of warmth I'm going for, lol.

Re: Talk to me about your bed linens

  • We have a duvet cover with no duvet for the reasons you stated.  I want a little more warmth than a sheet but not as much as a comforter.  You can't tell there is not duvet.  It just looks really smooth.
  • We have a quilt for the reasons you stated.  Comforters are just too hot for me.   I am looking for something else soon, because I don't really like the look of the quilt.

  • We have a solid red "coverlet" that we've been using the last couple of months. Our comforter is just too hot, and ended up on the floor every night.  The coverlet is basically like a quilt, but a little lighter and softer.
  • I am 99.9% sure this is what we have from Target. It's about the weight of a quilt, without the farm house quilt look. Ours is solid brown and about 3 years old, so I think the stitched patterns are different, but I really can't recommend it enough. In fact, not long ago I was talking to DH about redoing our bedroom again and I will buy another one in a different color. I love it because it fits in our washer (we have a king) and has held up amazingly well.

In the event that link isn't the right thing, when you're looking at Target it's the Fieldcrest Luxury line and there is a whole aisle (usually) of assorted colors with matching sheets and throw pillows etc.

  • I'm right there with ya - our giant fancy comforter is always in a LARGE pile on the floor. We actually sleep with an old ratty comforter from college that was probably part of a "bed-in-a-bag"! It is thinner and softer than the fancy one, and doesn't have to be dry cleaned. It is ugly as all get out though...

We have a coverlet/quilt thing in the guest room from Crate and Barrel. It sounds like what you are looking for. Not 'country' in the slightest.

I tried the duvet cover without a duvet thing - and it just looked like a big messy sheet on the bed. But it may have been the type of duvet cover we have.

Yeah, know what you mean by that.  I had a duvet cover with tulips on it from Ikea that I loved, but could never make it look "smooth" on the bed because there was nothing inside.

Kimmer - thanks, I'll take a look!  I think I've seen that line at Target and am drawn to the country florals in that section and then tell myself, "but that isn't what you WANT in your master bedroom, dummy!"  It's what I'd have if I was a lesbian or there was no DH.  Or I had a DH who liked florals, hehe.

I like the quilts on Anthropology because they aren't your grandma's kind of quilts.  More like moroccan themed or something.  But too moroccan themed.

I think I might have to make my mother gush with joy and make myself a crazy quilt using fabrics in the colors I actually want in my master... I can do a top but would have to have her friend actually quilt it, and then I could do the binding to finish it off.

  • We got this one (also from Target) for a guest blanket for when people sleep on the air mattress, and I really like it.  It says it's partially "down", but it's very thin, and I don't find it hot at all.  (this review actually says they bought it for a light blanket and it works well).  It easily fits in our washer (we have the queen but I am sure the King would, too).  They should have them in the stores, maybe you could go by and feel the materials of the blankets to see if you can find what thickness you are looking for.
  • We have a thin quilt, I think I bought it at bb&b. It is solid yellow on one side, and a pretty tropical print (yellow, purple, coral, green) on the other side. Our sheets totally don't match, but are soooooo super soft I don't care...lol.

Yeah, they have the shabby chic type stuff that I love, but DH would move out if I did anything like that. The line that mine came from are all solid coverlets. I think it came with two shams also, but I can't remember. I have them, I just don't know if I bought them separately or not.

Yes, shabby chic, not country.  I love their soft blue and pink shabby chic line.  I might have to force it on Madeline and live vicariously through her.

  • Have you checked West Elm or Pottery Barn?
  • Thanks for the suggestion.  I love PB but most of what I like from there falls in the DH-would-nix-it category.

I've never looked at West Elm.  I'll go see what they've got!

  • I second West Elm. They have Anthro type quilts that side on more modern/clean design than Anthro coo-coo crazy prints. Pottery Barn may have something in the weight you want. Don't forget about Crate and Barrel.

I have 3 duvets and 1 quilt for our bed and switch em' out when I'm bored. I really like bed linens.

Theres always Marshalls/TJMaxx/Homegoods. There may be a gem in there!

Good luck and have fun shopping!

  • I have a quilted bedspread, from Style&Co at Macy's. Mine is discontinued--it's a gorgeous dark gold--I have it paired with dark teal sheets...but I digress.  It's a good weight.  It's similar to these:

  • We have a duvet cover but I bought a really thin duvet to go inside at HomeGoods. I think it was actually called a blanket but it's very lighly stuffed, probably 1/4 the stuffing of the averge duvet. It's perfect most of the year but thin enough that we have to add an extra blanket or two when it's super cold outside. We also have a light quilt on the bed so during the hottest parts of the summer (now!) we have the duvet folded half-way down the bed.

ETA: It's fairly similar to this one but I can't say for sure without seeing it in person.

  • We have a Nicole Miller coverlet on our bed (we got it as a wedding present). It does look sort of like a quilt but with a modern twist to it. It's held up really well! It came from bb&b. I know they have similar styles to the one we have. Ours is the pretty seafoam green. We use a another small blanket under it just to make it a little thicker and warmer. Plus if I'm cold in the middle of the night I hog all the covers and leave DH with nothing. lol!

On our other beds we have a duvet cover w/ no blanket inside. I can't seem to spend the money on a blanket for it because the duvet cover is to big and I'm not totally in love with it. My bff gave it to us because she didn't return it in time and it didn't fit her bed. On the other bed we have a comforter from Target. I like it and so far its held up well.

  • i suggest looking on www.garnethill.com Very nice quality and a wide variety of styles, from traditional to very funky to whimsical. companystore.com is another great option.

  • I agree with checking Marshalls/TJMaxx/Homegoods first. We also got a great blanket at ikea that everyone loves. Addie perfers it to her PB one. It's thinner then a comforter, solid color and not too warm. My sister has the same one and uses it as her main blanket on the bed. They are all solid color but different shades on each side.

  • There are a variety of coverlets or Mateless? that you can find that are natural and not country quilt looking. I don?t make them (I only produce luxury sheets, duvets and shams). But check our Seffra, Signoria, Yves Delorme to name a few. These are higher end as they are European, however very nice quality. For lower end check out Pine Cone Hill. When you want some great sheets take a look at my site www.verolinens.com
