Names: a poll (kinda)

I hear a lot of people always say, "Oh, we almost named them so and so" and it's interesting how people come to their final name decision.  So what did you almost name your child and why?

What were you almost named?

Re: Names: a poll (kinda)

  • We almost went with Addison, but then decided it as a middle name.  We're very non-traditional when it comes to middle names, so since we liked Addison and Kaylee, we went with Kaylee Addison.  It was Addison until about 30 weeks.

We struggled with boy names and the only other one on our list was Jace and I wasn't sold on it.  We ended up with Brenden Cash because I liked the sound of it (again, untraditional middle name).

My mom always tells me that they named me because a guy my dad worked with said he liked it and they "stole" it from him.  Lol!

  • If we didn't keep his name as is, we were going to give B the first name of Niles. I love the name and it ties back to Ethiopia of course as it plays such a huge role in the country. I think once we saw his picture, we knew we weren't going to change his name and meeting his birth family helped to confirm that we really made the right decision.
  • If I was a boy I would have been Joe. My mom really like Samantha or Sam for a girl but when I was born the Dr said "She looks like a Lindsay" so they went with that. I'm so glad b/c I love my name.
  • Our top 3 were Austin, Landon and Ayden. Ayden was our favorite, but spelling it that way isn't very common, it's usually Aiden or Aidan. I didn't like those spellings, and didn't want to spell it Ayden cause I was worried that we would never be able to find things with his name on it with it spelled that way. My sister's name is Alissa, not the most common spelling of Alyssa. I always remember that she would always get so upset when she was small cause she would never be able to find things that spelled it Alissa. So, Ayden was out.

Then it came down to Landon and Austin and it became an issue of sticking with the A theme or not, and ultimately we decided too. And DH decided he liked Austin more anyway, so we just went with that. :)

  • Sawyer's name was part of the 4 we had for that morning of delivery.  The other names we were looking at were

Harrison, Anderson, Jackson and I was still holding on to Silas.  When I got in the shower before leaving the hospital I told DH either of them would work but my 2 preferences were Harrison or Sawyer.  DH really loved Sawyer so we went with it.  Granted his actual name is Robert Sawyer because he was named after my father.

  • Hunter was always Hunter.

Spencer on the other hand was going to be Cooper and for a small moment Parker. We came across the name Spencer at 37 weeks and both fell in love with it.

My mom gave me my name because she said it was a hot summer night....um I was born in April so who knows?! =)

Married 5/14/07 Momma to two amazing boys 6/20/08 & 11/20/09
  • "Jack" was decided right away; soon after we found out about the pregnancy.  Had he been a girl, he would've been an Audrey, after my late g-ma.

And, well, I think we all know how this one's name thing is going. . .

I would've been David had I been a boy.  My mom wanted Danielle as my first name, but the other contributing person in my DNA convinced her of Jennifer.  Danielle is my middle name.

  • Peyton was supposed to be Jael (it's biblical and she is bada$$) but J hated it.

Berkeley was going to be Adriana or Addison

Mara was between Mara and Isla until she was 4 hours old and we settled on Mara Addison.

Jude would be Isla Jude if he were a she

I was seconds from being Veronica....ugh.

  • I always wanted a son named Tyler or Jake.  Jake was too common, and DH didn't like Tyler.  I really fought for Tyler since I didn't want a kid with a nickname.

DS1 was actually supposed to be Samuel Matthew and DS2 was supposed to be Lucas Steven. DH didn't like Samuel with his name, so we switched them around.  (Although I wasn't crazy about Samuel Steven S____.)  I'm glad we did because Sam is such a Sam and Luke is TOTALLY a Luke.

I was going to be Alexander John if I was a boy.  I'd have made an adorable AJ, I think. Big Smile

I think your mother was referring to the night you were conceived. Wink Which would've been August or so, right?

HA Yeah I've said that too but she swears she delivered on a hot summer night! =)

  • My mom only had one ultrasound with me (which was obviously the norm then), and they told her I was a boy. I have several older brothers and they were over the moon and the room was blue, the crib was blue and my name was supposed to be Cody Joseph E____. Then my mom had me and Suprise! I wasn't a boy. So my mom wanted to name me Cody Jo anyways, but my dad decided on Cassidy Ann instead and convinced her to change it. :)

Afterwards my oldest brother brandon was upset that I was a girl that he threatened to drown me in the creek if they brought me home- we still hate each other to this day. lol

  • We didn't consider any other names for Lawrence.  He would have been Lawren if he was a girl.

Andersen was REALLY close to being a Miles.  In fact, we called him Miles Patrick for a few months.  We thought about his middle name (Jace) as a first name, too.

We were sure about Ruby being Ruby.  If Andersen had been a girl, he probably would have been Margorie Julianne with the nickname Meg.  (I always wanted Ruby, but H wasn't convinced until we were on our third).

If we'd decided not to use family names, our kids would have ended up with WAY different monikers.  I liked Asher for AJ.  I love girl names like Stella, Violet, Charlotte, Ainsley, Leighton, Lena and Josephine.

I was almost Becki Jo or Trisha Sue. Indifferent (I was born in the south).  Really thankful I ended up with the name I have.

  • Addison was going to be either Emerson (my choice) or Jane (DH's choice). We basically both vetoed each other's choices, and ended up agreeing on Addison with Jane as the middle name.

Ryne was never anything but Ryne. That was the only boy name we ever considered. My DH had told me that if he ever had a boy, his name would be Ryne after Ryne Sandberg. His middle name is Joseph after DH's dad's middle name and his granfather's first name.

My parents were going to name me Nicole Jolene, and my mom swears that my dad was holding out for Jethro if I was a boy. Indifferent Thank goodness I was not a boy.

"IF" we have any other kids, then we will stick with old fashion middle names. My choices would be Emerson Kate or Marissa Kate if we have a girl, and Kian Matthew for a boy.

  • I was almost Tina Ann.

    Ick!

Owen was always Owen - if he was a girl, he would have been Mia at the time.

  • Benjamin was always going to be Benjamin-we never even thought about girl names before we found out he was a boy.  He was originally going to be Benjamin Thomas Bertram, but he is Benjamin Michael Bertram.  I had a weird dream when pregnant that he HAD to be Benjamin Michael instead.

Nathaniel wasn't named until he was a few hours old.  We knew he would be _________ James Earl.  We considered either Jeremiah or Nathaniel.   After he was born and we were discussing which he should be, my mom pointed out we would have a Ben and Jerry.  We scratched Jeremiah immediately and went with Nathaniel!

Josephine has always been my favorite name in the world (after my Grandma whom I am close with).  James wasn't convinced, so she wasn't named until the day of hospital discharge.  We knew she would be ___________ Lily Beth though.  James finally got smart and just said "you pick and I'll be happy"....so I went with Josephine.

Theodore was the only boy name that we could decide on.  He was always going to be Theodore Frederick Stephen if we had a boy.  If he had been a girl, we were either going with Katherine (Katie) or Lucille (Lucy).  Middle names weren't decided on for a girl though.

My parents actually were going to name me Shera Sky but my mom changed her mind after they saw me!  I am *so* thankful!!!!

  • Maren was almost "Charlotte" with a nn of "Charlie." Other names on the list were Lucy, Lily and Eleanor with a nn of "Ellie." If Maren had been a boy she would have been "Charlie."

Tommy was also almost "Charlie." If he were a girl, he would have been Ruby.

Kolbe would have been "Maeve" if he were a girl and #4 will be Maeve if a girl - when we are expecting #4.

If I were a boy I would have been Patrick, but my parents were sold on Kimberly for a girl.

Tied the knot: 6.19.04 Mommy to 3 awesome kids: Maren 3/06, Tommy 12/07 amd Kolbe 8/09
  • Other boy names we considered for #1: James, William, Colin. His middle name is Ryan after a cousin of mine who died when he was 14 & I was 11. If he had been a girl we were set on Caroline but no definite middle name.

#2 was going to be a Caroline or Eleanor if a girl. We also considered James & William very strongly for him but decided against James (the front runner) b/c I didn't want their first names to have the same first letter.

My parents were going to name me Patrick if I was a boy (my younger brother is named Patrick) & they initially planned on naming me Molly (which I think is kind of cute, but my maiden name is Mc___ so I think that would have been a bit much).

  • Mason was Asher for a long time, but in the running for boys was Cash, Anderson, & Maxwell. If he was a girl it was Avery Mae.

if I was a boy I would have been William Edward III....yikes!
  • Cohen was always Cohen. We had that name picked out before or right after we were married. We had a back-up name of Cooper for him for like one month, but then it got really popular. Cohen's middle name is Christopher, which is DH's name. For Cambry, we also had the name picked out forever. She was supposed to be Cambria, but then my bro and SIL named one of my triplet nieces Bria the year prior not knowing since we never shared any of our baby names until they were born. We couldn't come up with another girl name we like, so we just shortened it to Cambry. Her middle name is Kay which is also my middle name and my mom's middle name. As for my name, I have never asked!
  • Evan was always Evan.  We had discussed Nathan when I got pregnant the second time but Dh suggested Evan after his gma and it stuck.  If he'd been a girl he would have been Cara (my choice).

We are 99% sure this one will be Wyatt if a boy and 1000% sure it will be Elsa if a girl.  Middle names will be Daniel after DH or Maren after me.  My middle name is Marie (and so is my mom's) but I hate it so we'll use Maren instead.

I was almost Cara but then they found Kendra in a name book on the way to pick me up.  I wish they'd stayed with Cara!

  • It took us forever to decide Lyra was the one although we had no other options so if it wasn't I'm not sure what we would have done, I think part of it was fear of committing to it and something bad happening as in the past. We decided on Alexandra about a week before she was born. Dh suggested it and at that point I was fine with it as I like Alessandra but he thought it was to long(????). He also wanted her to have the initials of LAW.
  • Jude was Jude from day one.  We're huge Beatles fans plus it took us 2.5 years to conceive him and St. Jude is the patron saint of lost causes so it had special meaning.  If he were a girl, he would've been Fiona or Julia after grandmothers.

We have no clue what to name this baby!  Probably another one syllable name since our last name is really long.

I was almost Redmond (gag), Paige, or Claire.

  • We got to finalize Charlie by saying 1,2,3 and the first name we thought of we said. We both said Charlie. Other names on the list: Liam, Daniel, and Wesley (J hates that one).

I was almost a Georgia. Oy.  I don't know if that would have fit me.

  • Anders was unnamed for about 36 hours. We were team green, and our other boy name was Graham.

I'm hoping this one is a girl (team green again) because I have no clue on another boy name.

    I was almost Maeve.

  • Madison was always Madison.  That has been my girl name for as long as I can remember - long before it became popular.  I really wanted Macy to be Briley, but DH just wasn't sold on that.  I had mentioned Macy early on in the pregnancy, and he didn't like it.  We also really weren't planning on doing all "M"s, but that kind of just happened.  We basically ended up kind of settling on Macy because we couldn't agree on anything else.  Now I absolutely love her name, and it fits her perfectly.

  • We had always talked about our first boy being Jackson David and calling him Jack. David is of course DH's name but also his dad's middle and grandpa's name. At about 6 months we decided on Owen (after contemplating all of the -den names ie. Brayden, Caden.....). Then we decided his middle name to be Simon, after my dad's middle name since he didn't have any boys and Owen was the first boy in the family. It was also a family name as my cousin has it for a middle name and it originates from Brother Simon VanA____. We didn't have a girl name picked for him.

Jocelyn was a hard one for us to pick a name we liked. We could come up with a bunch of boy names we really liked this time but not too many girl names. Claire was one though. In all honesty, DH was working one night and i was up late watching Teen Mom. Remember the black girl who named her baby Jocelyn Jayden? Yep, I kept saying Jocelyn to myself and kindof liked it. So when DH got home in the wee hours and crawled into bed I ran it past him. At first he was like "Jozzzlyn?" I told him no, not "z", "s" sounding. He wasn't sold on it right away but Owen and I kept calling her that and it rubbed off :) Her middle name is Marie, after mine (which was after my grandma, Mary Jo). IF we ever have a third and it's a boy, he is definately getting the middle name of David, I think we both like Wyatt David.

I have no idea what i was going to be. My name comes from the fact that my older sister is named Heidi and I was born in December so I think that paired with sticking to the "H" names, it was obvious.

    Holly
  • Alissa is the only name we agreed upon. I pushed for Kiah for awhile. Devon wanted Alice which is where Alissa came from. I wanted a name that was a little different because I was always one of 10 Jessica's in my class. Devon wanted a normal name because his was always so unique. Which is part of the reason behind the spelling of Alissa, and I didn't like the y in Alyssa. Jean is a family name. If she was a boy she would have been Connor Dean, because Dean is also a family name. My name was almost Holly because of the Christmas birthday. Lori and Jennifer were also contenders.

  • We considered Michael, as that is DH's middle name and DH's first name is his dad's middle name, so we'd be keeping some tradition.  But ultimately, we decided to use both of our grandfather's names for our firstborn (so DH's grandpa for first name, and my grandpa for middle name).  We may save Michael for future use, but I also really like Jack.  For a future girl, I really like Kaitlyn Louise.  Louise was my greatgrandma's name and my grandpa always called me Lisa Louise (although my name is Lisa Marie).

If I would have been a boy, my mom said I would have been Greg with two G's. I don't know if that means "Greg" or "Gregg".  To me, Gregg is greg-ga and technically has 3 G's. Ha ha.  I am not named after Elvis Presley's daughter.  My mom says she just liked the way the name sounded and her name is Mary.
