Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

I just finished reading the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and I have to admit I was disappointed.  Although the topic was really interesting, I thought the author could have done a better job making the story more gripping.  By the time I got about half way through, I was bored.  And I just kept waiting for something dramatic to happen, but it never did.  I know a number of you ladies read it and recommended it, so I'm wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

  • I hate when I read books like that. I haven't read that one yet.

  • oh I forgot about that book!  I remember seeing a thing in the news about it and wanted to read it - I'm also just a science nerd so I thought it was an interesting topic :)
  • No help here; I loved it.

  • I loved it too.  I agree to an extent that I didn't find the story of the family to be particularly riveting because in my opinion, I didn't feel like there was that big of a moral dilemma; the family thought they were entitled to a lot more that I personally felt like they were.

But I still loved reading about the scientific achievements and issues associated with the HeLa cells, and I enjoyed reading about the journey the author went through in researching the story and getting to know the family. It wasn't a plot-driven book for sure, but I thought it was fascinating and I learned a lot.

  • Ah, it's on my to-read list!

Tobi, I meant to tell you... I finally finished The Book Theif. I am SO glad I didn't give up on it... it was excellent! I definitely got more used to the narrator and ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. :)

I'm so glad you didn't quit on it! I really love it. A group in my drama class this summer used it as a text to explore and it was insanely intense. I walked out shaking. I'm planning on teaching it this year to my grade 9s.

It was really difficult for me to get a handle on the narration, and I kept feeling interrupted while reading. I'm a sucker for books with non-happy endings, and the relationships within the text were built together SO perfectly, especially the one between Leisel and Max. LOVED it.
