Here is one of the sea turtle videos we took on vacation. The image quality isn't great, but it was still so amazing for it to swim right past me. Gives me goosebumps! I love snorkeling!

Oahu
We stayed at one of the Outrigger hotels (Ohana East). It was ok, but not great. It was a pretty cheap room (even their better rooms aren't too much). It did the job, but wasn't great. Waikiki was not my style at all.
Two sites worth visiting in the area are Pearl Harbor and the National Cemetery (visit PH early; they open at 7 or 8 and there are long waits for the boat shuttle to the memorial). We didn't do much else, as our primary reason for visiting the island this time was to visit with friends.
Kauai
We stayed at a timeshare in Kapa'a. The town isn't spectacular, but it is centrally located, which worked well b/c we had things planned in all areas of the island. Poipu (south) would be great for families, and the north shore of the island would be great for couples and families with older children.
We started our vacation with a couples beach massage, which was truly marvelous; did a lot of short hikes -- Waimea Canyon, Alaka'i Swamp, a small section of the Hanakapai'ai/Kalalau Trail (Na Pali Coast), Nounou/Sleeping Giant, kayak/hike Wailua River/falls; explored the towns a little (less than i usually would, since we were sharing the rental car... not really my preference, but i was outvoted); didn't dine out much, but did attend a luau (it was pretty cool, but i'm not sure anything about it was authentic, beyond perhaps the pig) and attended a rum tasting (i don't know about rum quality, but the dark rum tasted really good).
Flight in between -- D was randomly selected for a pat down, which was a long process, but aside from that the Lihue airport is small and quaint. The flight was 25 min, but was really smooth.

yeah wakiki is way touristy. But ever since cheesecake factory opened up, its shot up in on my likeability list. I go to the restaurant more in hawaii than i do in seattle, since im never downtown.
im glad u got to go to kauai and see more of the natural hawaii landscape. Ever watch Colbie Caillat's The Little Things video? its shot in kauai and captures the island beauty well.
Those pics are beautiful! I wish it was like that here today.
I strongly dislike the fish there. When I was 8 years old my parents and I were there. I was swimming and my new birthday ring slipped off my finger and a fish came along and ate it as I was reaching for it! I was so mad.
harvest it's poop. problem solved

I'm guessing that fish is long gone.
