Sprint vs. Verizon

I have been loyal to Verizon since 2001. Overall I've had good service and reception so no complaints. My phone took a dive and doesn't work at all so i need to go in to Verizon and get a new one. I HATE that most of the phones are smartphones and require you to pay a data plan. Right now I have the EnV touch, which i've never really liked, but it worked ok for me and didn't require a data plan (actually now it does but i was grandfathered in, FFS). I would like the 4G iPhone but probably not happening.

DH and I pay about $140/month and that is WITH a 22% discount. Basically he is added onto my plan. We share 1400 minutes and don't even come close to that, proably more like 700. I don't want to knock down to the next tier which is 700 minutes because our luck we will go over. We have the "my circle" which included 10 numbers that we call and i think that helps in not using the minutes plus a lot of people we call are Verizon/alltel (But with sprint it wouldn't matter). And if we add data plans then the bill is over $200, ridiculous!

So on to Sprint......I was talking briefly with E about it yesterday and then I came home and my neighbor came over who has Sprint also. I found out that Sprint's night's start at 7 (Ver is 9), you don't have to pay for a data plan, it's included (you pay out the azzz with V), you can call ANY mobile with Sprint (V is only V2V). All of those things pretty much sell me to sprint. For some reason i'm not sprinting (ha!) over there though. I worry about the reception i will get when going to Columbus, their CS, etc.....

Also, When i sign up, do i get a discount on a phone and do they have any perks when it comes time to get a new one? Verizon used to have "New every 2" which was every 2 years you get $100 towards a new phone. They've done away with that and now give you $50 :( I feel like Verizon is slowly sucking the life out of everything!

So tell me why I should/should not switch to Sprint and why I should/should not leave Verizon because Sprint puts a pretty good steak out there......

Re: Sprint vs. Verizon

  • I have had sprint since 1999.  I am happy with them, and you might check and see if you can get a corp discount thru Davids work.  I would they they are large enough to get it :)

As for the reception out there in cbus, its not 100% like in Omaha, but its not bad. I can typically be on the phone the whole way home from cbus.  West of town it gets spotty however.

The any mobile plan is great. My parents and I share the 1500 min plan, and normally only use 800'ish min.  DH is on a work cell with Verizon, so it saves us a lot of min.

Also, if you do switch, I would highly suggest going to NFM, they always have better deals than the sprint store. I got my new evo free, and it was going to be $150 at the Sprint store.

  • We have Sprint and I have no complaints! We were paying $155 a month including taxes and that is 1400 min and the data plan. We don't use nearly that many minutes b/c any cell phone is free for calling but that is the lowest family plan. I just got an Evo so have to pay $10 extra a month I think because of the 4g. I wasn't too happy about that but oh well.

We only get a new phone every 2 years when your contract is up. You get super good rebates. I think it depends on the phone for what rebates and also each month some get cheaper. You can even go to places like NFM and get better discounts. My phone is a $450 phone and I paid $99. I do think that is still so pricey and definetly don't "need" a smartphone but for right now I love it. I have never had a phone break though and their customer service has always been really good. We go to the one on 114 and dodge b/c they aren't as busy. 72 and dodge is terribly busy all the time.

  • We love sprint.  My husband (main line) gets an upgrade every year and I get an upgrade every 2 years.  Its a good upgrade.  You can get a 1/2 upgrade at the 1 year mark for the 2nd phone (at least with our plan).   I cant remember how many minutes we have but we have the all included plan and there has never been any extras attached.  I have had some phone issues and they have been super about getting it fixed after the "main" 72nd or 114th looks at it.  I have called the Sprint customer service as well and they have been super nice too.  We switched from Verizon because of their customer service we had there.  We have been with Sprint for well over 7 years.

Agree. I have great luck with the CS people at 114th.

I have had sprint for almost 7 years now...I have had an above average experience with them. The service is good in town and decent all the way to the IL's in Devid City (SW of Cbus). I like having the data - wifi, GPS etc as I don't use my computer at all after sitting in front of it all day.

A huge perk for me (I am REALLY hard on phones) is that I have only had to buy 3 phones: when I initially signed a contract, when I 'upgraded' to a bb and again when I upgraded to the Evo. I have the protection plan and have (or I have forced them to) replace any time I have other problems - probably 8-10 times!

This said, I have never had Verizon so I can't really compare them FWIW.

  • I vote sprint like pps. We have unlimited messaging, data and 1400 min and we pay 135 every month.

Is this your total bill? Also, is it a shared plan? We will do a family plan (DH and I) and i'm thinking/hoping i will get a discount through DH's work too so that would be a bonus!

  • 135 is our total bill! It's a family plan I think it's called "family unlimited data" with 1400 min. I do have a small discount from my work but if you can get one through your dhs work it yours should be right around 135. This includes taxes and insurance on both of our phones. I used to hate sprint but have been back with them for a year and have had no issues. I just wish they had the iPhone =( I'm guessing they will get it soon, hopefully. Hope all this helps. It's worth looking into and go in and they can tell you the discount you'll get I think.
