BC pill causing anxiety?

Anyone have issues with bc causing anxiety for them?  I switched from the NR to a pill I had previously used without issue.  1.5 packs into that new pill I had a massive, unprovoked panic attack that resulted in me having a full cardiac work up and a CT to rule out a pulmonary embolism Indifferent  Since that time I've been dealing with regular feelings of anxiety which is something I've never experienced in my life.

I finally asked my doc to switch my bc to another pill but no one has ever been able to tell me if the bc could be the cause of it.  So has anyone else experienced this?  I'm really hoping I try this new pill and it just goes away because this sucks!

Thanks!

Re: BC pill causing anxiety?

  • That is really interesting. I can't really help you, but I have been taking yaz for about a year and a half and I have noticed an increase in my anxiety level. I have just never thought to ask my doc if it has anything to do with the BC pills because there are so many other things that could be causing it, but I wonder if you are right. That would explain a lot. What pill are you on? I am panning on asking to switch to one with a lower dose of hormones, maybe that would help you  too? I'm sorry I can't really help much, but it is an interesting question. I would like to know too.

  • Yes, your pill could certainly be causing your anxiety. If your doctor hasn't admitted that possibility, you need to get a new doctor.

I was on Yasmin for about 6 months, and suffered major anxiety attacks and mood swings. My body didn't like the kind/balance of hormones. My GYN took me off the Yasmin and put me on the NuvaRing, and I felt better that next month.

  • I have been on a few different birth control pills. I started on Yasmin and had no problems. When I switched to Ortho Lo, I was experiencing a lot of anxiety and I had no idea why. I actually posted about it here and a lot of people thought maybe I just had an anxiety disorder.

I went to my doctor and they said sometimes the Triphasic pills cause feelings of anxiety and/or depression. I switched to beyaz (the low dose of yasmin) and I almost immediately felt better (probably about a 1-2 weeks). I haven't had a problem since and its been about 5 months.

  • Yes, that can be pretty common. I believe the huge pamphlet of side effects that comes with your pills even lists anxiety as a possibility. I had the same thing happen to me. I took a low hormone pill for seven years with no problem. I was talked into a different one by my GYN. I was on that for two years, but when I tried to switch back to my old pill, my body would not tolerate it.

The drop in hormones was too much and sent my body into shock. I had panic attacks that would last for over an hour, and Xanax could not touch them. I even was sent to the hospital and checked for a PE just like you. Doctors said I just had anxiety, and it could not be caused by the pill. I endured this for nearly a year until I got back on a higher hormone BC. I haven't had a panic attack since.

  • The pill can absolutely cause anxiety. I went through this while on Yaz.

  • Wow!  Thank you everyone.  I'm even more hopeful now that this pill is the cause of my issues and the new one will resolve it.
