Kindle or Nook?

M wants one for his birthday, but I'm stumped as to which one to get. Are they essentially the same thing? Same capabilities? It seems they are nearly identical. Which do you have/recommend? Thanks!

Re: Kindle or Nook?

  • I have an iPad with both Nook and Kindle apps. I love them both. I have found that Kindle App (amazon) has a better book selection, or at least they have the ones I am looking for when the Nook (b&n) doesnt have them availble in ebook format yet. (Barnes & Noble will say they have a better selection though). I like the Nook's "look" better. It is easier on my eyes and feels less that I am reading off of a computer screen.

  • we love our nooks.  the screen kinda looks like you're reading a book and not off a glaring computer screen.  mine isn't backlit, but i bought a little clip-on light for it.  works just fine.
  • So are the new ones all backlit?  Is it a feature you can turn on./off?  I would think it would be better to not have them backlit so you're not straining your eyes, no?

Believe it or not I have researched them, I'd just rather hear reviews from real people :)

  • I got H a Kindle because I already had bought ebooks via Kindle for PC and I like the ease of ordering from Amazon.

There are 2 types of Nook, the color version (which is backlit and more expensive) and the e-ink version (not backlit, cheaper).ETA: The Kindle is e-ink.

I like that the e-ink Nook is smaller than the Kindle, and doesn't have the useless letterpad.

My thoughts are: I like the Nook itself better than the Kindle, but I like Amazon more than B&N. You just have to decide which is more important.

  • I have the Nook Color and I really like it. It's also great for children's books since they'll have color photos.

You can root your Nook Color to be basically an Android Tablet. I'm not too savvy when it comes to these things so I doubt I'll be doing it anytime soon. If it's rooted you can easily download the Kindle app onto it and then you are able to get books from either source.

  • I forgot to add that the Nook Color is back lit and you can't turn it off. But, you can turn it almost completely off/down. I do that when it's just too bright in a dark room.

I like how easily accessible the parts of the Nook Color are.  It reminds me of the Apple platform on my iPhone.

Also, you can continue where you left off when you use the Nook App on your iPhone. I'd assume they have that for the Kindle as well but I don't know.

If you get the Nook Color you don't get the AT&T Free Hotspot Wifi but you do on their basic models. The Nook Color has a slot for a MicroSD card (where that weird loop thing is on the corner, it opens and you insert it right there into the unit itself).

You can read for 1 hour for free at the Barnes and Noble store. I don't know what selection you get to choose from. Also, I've heard that you can go over the 1 hours too but not if it's busy. If you root your Nook Color you can't do it, according to some people online.

Oh, and rooting it makes it like a tablet so you can download programs from the Android Market similar to like you can do with the iTunes and the iPad.

  • I have the kindle. I LOVE it! I definitely recommend it, the books are pretty cheap depending on what you want. I have the one with the wifi enhancement, so I order it on my computer and as soon as I turn it on the book downloads so I don't have to worry about always having the cords and can access my kindle from anywhere that has wifi through amazons website and I can order books straight from the kindle. I also love the sample options it gives for each book, I've gotten some samples that are two chapters long so it really gives me a feel for the book and if I'll like it or not.

That being said, I don't know if the nook does this or not since I don't have it. I also recommend getting a cover for it, amazon has some covers that have lights in them already on their website or you can always buy both separately.

  • If you are going to be stationed overseas at any time in the near future (next couple of years), the you will want the Kindle. The Nook still does not have international licensing and you cannot purchase books (even with the IPad Nook App) overseas.

  • One vote Kindle!

We have one and can download books at any time wirelessly (we are overseas and have the 3g/wi-fi). Our neighbor has a Nook and can only download if she's plugged into a computer. This is a huge advantage for us since we 1) live overseas and 2) travel outside of the US a lot even when we were stationed stateside. She has since bought a Kindle. :)

    I have a Nook.

I liked it because it was cheaper than a Kindle. lol

I have the first edition, so the only thing I don't like is that it can't be backlit so I need a light if I want to read at night.

    Yes

I also have the first edition, it has some hiccups but I chalk that up to it being the first edition.

I also like that I can go into any B & N store and read a book for free and any book that's been released digitally is available on the Nook...last I heard there were some issues with certain publishers and Amazon so you couldn't always get the book you wanted right away.

  • I have the Sony Reader Pocket Edition. Its little but its the perfect size for me. It fits in my bag and doesn't take up a lot of extra space. It doesn't have wi- fi but its so easy to download from my computer. The Sony book store has a bunch of free E books and they rotate them often. The regular Sony Reader has wi-fi and was not much more, but I just wanted the smaller one and didn't care about wi-fi.

  • I have a Kindle and LOVE it.

  • I did a lot of research on the two and ended up buying the Kindle.  I like that you can read it outside without a glare, which you can't with a Nook.  Also, the backlighting is supposed to be really bad for your eyes, so I didn't want that.  I love that people can just buy Amazon gift cards too, where from what I've been told Barnes & Noble gift cards can't be used for Nook books.

The main thing we figured is that eventually one company is going to come out on top.  Just like when blue-ray first came out, there was also another type that came out, I think HD-DVD?  But basically only one stuck around, and it was blue-ray, making the other obsolete.  If that happens with the Kindle and Nook, I think it's pretty safe to say that Amazon isn't going anywhere, where book stores are struggling.
