Sewing newbie in need of advice please!

I'm going to be starting a new project soon.  It's an outfit for my DD (pinafore and bloomers) and I want to get the top monogrammed.  The top is going to be lined with muslin fabric so my question is...Should I complete the outfit then take it in to be monogrammed?  Or would it be better to get the main fabric monogrammed then finish the garment afterward so that the back of the monogramming is covered by the lining fabric?

Thanks for helping me out!

Re: Sewing newbie in need of advice please!

  • Definitely have it monogrammed first.  Sometimes embroidery can irritate your skin, there are certain stabilizers you should use to back the embroidery on clothes to make it softer, but it can peel up over time and need to be re-ironed, and there's no reason IMO to NOT have it monogrammed first.
  • What about cutting the fabric pieces out first and then take whatever piece you need monogrammed to be monogrammed.  Being that you are a newbie to sewing or even for an intermediate sewer it will be very fustrating to cut the monogrammed piece out so that the image is exactly centered.  I also agree with the PP that stabilizer can be itchy which is why I didn't suggest to take it after the garment is made.   Good Luck!!!

  • Thanks for the replies.  Sorry I wasn't clear but I was/am planning to cut the piece out before taking it in for monogramming.

  • Talk to the person who is doing the monogramming and find out what they require.  Before I hooked up with my current embroiderer, I had to use local companies to do it.  One would NOT take "unfinished fabric."  It had to be a complete garment, product, etc.  The other would take fabric, but had specifications on the size and how the raw edges had to be finished.

That's crazy!  I do custom embroidery and I would MUCH rather do an unfinished garment/yardage; that way, I am not responsible if it isn't "perfectly aligned".

So, the answer to your question is, yes, have the monogramming done first.  Don't forget to launder the fabric first!

Also, Welcome, and, don't forget to PIP when you finish!
