where should we go?

DH and I are getting the travel bug again and we're trying to think of places to go this fall.  We have the vacation days to take a week somewhere (so...2 weekends, plus one work week = 9 days).  Where would IN go in October???

Re: where should we go?

  • If it was in November/December I could highly recommed Rio de Janeiro - Brazil (hehe love my city), but October... South America still a good option, Punta Del Este - Uruguay, Buenos Aires - Argentina ... good food, beautiful places and great culture. If you are willing to go to other countries, I hope this helps!

  • MattNCarol - thanks for the advice!  We'll probably leave South America alone until we move back home in the States...since it's much easier to get there from the US than from Europe.

We're thinking either Europe (Eastern Europe) or Africa...

  • I have always wanted to go to Prague/Czech Republic in general so I would go there :)
  • ah this is true, it's easier and guess it's cheaper too. But you're welcome, when you decide to go to South America, let me know .. I'll be glad to help more :)

  • Oooh you mentioned Africa...DH says October is the perfect time to go to Ethiopia, weather-wise.  The weather there is not super-variable there like it is here but in October the rainy season is over and it is cool, but not cold (60s-70s).
  • 9 days is a decent chunk of time.  I think Africa and the Middle East would be doable in that amount of time.

Where have you all been so far and what's still on your list?

  • We've done a lot of Western Europe...and DH isn't really wanting to do the ME (sigh...I'm thinking I might never get him there).  He mentioned Africa and India...but I'm not sure whether I want to spend so much travel time (when things in Eastern Europe are much closer, so we get more time in the place...and less jet lag).

I'm undecided!!!  No France, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany...we've done a lot in these places.

  • The Baltics? Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius would be nice at that time of year.

    CZ and Hungary?

    Morocco?

  • Ditto to Stever's response. If you are thinking about October then I would recommend Hungary or CZ. You can fly to the major cities from most regional airports (Eindhoven, Dusseldorf, Schiphol, etc.). Budapest and Prague are great walking cities.

I have visit both many times and have never not enjoyed myself. Morocco is also very lovely and the weather should be lovely.

What ever you decide. Have lots of fun.

  • I visited Istanbul in October and it was glorious weather. I really enjoyed myself. The Canaries are another place I want to go as well as Madagascar.

  • How about South Africa? I've never been, but my FIL loves Cape Town - its so beautiful! Its on my list of places to go. It would be spring, and probably great weather. Also, no jet lag!

  • Have you been to Egypt?  I know, I know-- Arab Spring.  But I'd go back (and might in Dec). I never felt unsafe.  Yeah, it's different than WEurope, but that's travel, right?

I think it needs at least 2wks, but the last time I went it was from the States-- w/o the massive flight, 10days could work.

  • October is our favourite month to travel. This year we're going to India which is probably a bit far!

We had a fantastic trip a few years ago to Southern Spain in October. It was great weather and a really beautiful part of the world. We went to Madrid (because of a flight problem with RyanAir), Cordoba, Granada and Nerja. It was one of our favourite trips.

However, Istanbul and Marrakesh have been on my list for forever so I would go to one of those. I just had friends go to each of them and the pictures are amazing.

We have a vague thought for a Tallinn (I've been but not DH), Riga, Kaunas trip someday also - RyanAir goes to all of them and they look like fantastic cities. Or Budapest / Bratislava. These are our vague thoughts for next year.
