Teachers (and others too!)-a scheduling question

Is it cruel for me to have an exam the Friday before Thanksgiving break?  They get the whole week off for Thanksgiving.  Class meets from 10:10-11 am.

That day works the best for my semester schedule BY FAR, but I don't want to deal with a lot of students "leaving early for break" and causing a problem.

Thoughts?

  • No. They get the whole week off, they don't need to leave early.

  • We had a lot of exams then. I try to wrap up a unit before heading on break plus they get a whole week off anyway. Just put it in your syllabus/outline at the beginning and they'll know and plan for it.

Ditto. Plus it beats having one on the Monday after.

    This exactly.

  • If it makes sense in the course then it just makes sense! Do it, but give them plenty of warning. Some students may ask for an option to take it earlier, so be prepared with an answer Stick out tongue Teachers did this all the time at my school; and I agree, it is WAY better than having it the day after break.

  • I always did - I spun it that they could either take it before Thanksgiving and really relax, or spend all of Thanksgiving studying (it was 25% of their grade).  Make sure that you tell them on day  so they don't try the traveling crap.  I only accepted that excuse when they showed me their pre-bought plane ticket.
  • I always had papers due around then, so I think it is fine.
