Salary desired question

I am applying for a job online. In the posting it said it pays $XX/hr.

On the application I have to put minimum salary desired. Should I just put the amount posted? I am fine with this salary but I never knew if you should up it or just put exact. I doubt I would get more so didn't want to get turned down if I upped it.

Re: Salary desired question

  • Why not try for a bit more?

  • I agree about trying for a bit more. Is it also possible to put a range?
  • You won't get turned down for the salary being a bit higher. (Not crazy higher, but a reasonable amount.) I like to take the amount I'm potentially earning and put it into a yearly value as opposed to hourly. If you work full time (40 hrs) there are 2080 hours in a year. Work with that number instead of the hourly (if that helps! If not ignore!)

Also, usually on applications, I put "negotiable" in the desired income amount and talk about it verbally...much easier that way. =) Good luck!

That's what I usually do too. If the application is in a form online where it will only take numerical answers, then I would put a little bit higher than you earn now.
