Hello! My husband and I will be making our first PCS in early 2012. Has anyone had experience with Malmstrom AFB?

I live here and I love it so far, though I'll admit I hate the winters! I am from Texas and winter here just really gets to me. But it's a bit of a contradiction, because I also absolutely love winter sports. It's just the volume of snow and the really extreme temperatures.
If you love hiking, camping, etc., this will be a fantastic assignment for you!
As for on-base housing, it's actually really nice; some of the best I've seen in the Air Force over the years. Most of the houses are brand new and they are still building. I prefer living on base here (well, we have to live on base, but even if we had a choice, I'd choose on base). The rental houses here stink (well, at least a lot of them, though you can find nicer places on the outskirts of town) and almost no one takes pets.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I went to college in MT and H grew up there. It is amazing and I cant tell you how jealous I am that you get to move there! But first order of business: buy a good jacket and good boots. It gets really cold. Invest in good winter gear. The people are incredibly nice. By the way, when you get to Great Falls you should head over to the Sip and Dip hotel/bar. There is an ancient lady with blue hair who plays the piano and sings (not well) and a mermaid swimming behind the bar. Very quirky!
H's advice is to always keep said blanket and boots and a blanket in your car. I dont know much about housing in Great Falls as I never lived there, but good luck!!
We've lived in AZ for the past 2 years and the winters here are extremely mild. On Christmas day last year the high was 80. This will be a huge change! H and I will have to completely change our wardrobes before leaving.
Thanks again for all the housing advice. Best case scenario is to live off base but because H's shop is so small, it might be easier to live on base to meet people.
I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions as the date gets closer so thank you ladies in advance for helping me not have a breakdown over this shhh!
I used to be in AGE! I cross-trained to dental eventually, but enjoyed AGE. I think in a squadron that small and with the culture on this base, I am betting the work is divided pretty equally. We don't have planes here; just helicopters, so as far as the AGE itself goes, there's probably not a ton of equipment, but enough for there to be plenty of work to go around. Just dress warm and enjoy the assignment! It's a great town with friendly people!
