Wedding Venue Suggestions

I know we are not on the knot anymore, but I know everyone has been to a million weddings in this area.  My friend was originally looking at getting married in a brewery but it not having much luck with that so she is looking for other places within 2 hours of Fairfax.  She wants a place where she can do the ceremony and reception in one and she doesn't want the country club feel.  Anyone have some unique places I can recommend to her?

Re: Wedding Venue Suggestions

  • I've never been there so I don't know this for sure, but Notaviva Winery in Purcellville (was featured on Dream House) was built jsut for this purpose. and I think Breaux Vineyards also does weddings?

  • i would try some vineyards - there are a few really nice ones that you can have a great wedding at. also i love thomas birkby house in leesburg. i know there are a few people here that got married there. briar patch is nice too. my latest obsession (i'm in the wedding biz) is murray hill in leesburg. i worked on this wedding there last fall and fell in love: http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/weddings/bridalparty/18086.html

feel free to pm me with more questions. i'm not a planner, btw - just know the venues :-)

I've been to Notaviva twice, it would be a great site for a wedding.

  • DH and I got married at Cabell's Mill in Centreville in October 2008. It is a historical site in Fairfax County, so you have to rent it through the society in charge of the historical sites in FFX County, but we had no problem with that. It was lovely for a fall wedding - we had the ceremony outside and the reception in the mill, both outside on the patio and inside. It is not as large as some sites, but could probably hold 100-125 if you use the entire facility for seating. I loved having my ceremony outdoors and the mill is beautiful and unique.

    Comus Inn?

Or Strong Mansion on Sugarloaf Mountain! (I might be biased.) There's the Sugarloaf Mountain Winery down the road but I don't think they do events. (Yet.)

  • Another vote for Thomas Birkby in Leesburg.  Yes, I am biased ;)

  • I loved looking at venues, I looked into a ton of them (and visited about 15)!

I'm trying to figure out what style a brewery would be considered - more down-to-earth vs fancy schmancy? Also how many people is she looking for? If it is a smaller party, she could investigate rehearsal dinner options.

There are also more options if a tent is a possibility.

For wineries - check on the winery policies about serving anything other than their wine.

Here are some ideas based on the non-country club feel idea (haven't actually been to any for a wedding but have seen some gorgeous pictures, I added a mix of price ranges):

-Lightfoot in Leesburg  - converted bank building

-Torpedo Factory in Alexandria - art gallery

    -Peabody Library in Baltimore

-Meridian House in DC - stunning linden tree grove

-Grand Atrium in Vienna - lots of brick, would need to be an indoor wedding since there aren't really any grounds

-other historic sites on the Fairfax County list beyond those already mentioned - Fairfax Old Town Hall, Hunter House in Vienna (need a tent for a large party)

-for a daytime wedding, some smaller restaurants might allow them to rent the whole place (went to a very nice one like that in Bethesda, but ceremony was held elsewhere)

-down-to-earth - PJ Skidoos in Fairfax - lots of brick, has a banquet room downstairs, not sure about ceremony possibilities, though

Are mansions considered a country-club feel? There are a number of them to the west of Fairfax or in DC...some do require tenting (including Birkby House, but their tent is a permanent structure). There are also some farms that might be a different type of venue.

With most venues, the look can change based on the table linens, type of chairs and other decor.
