where is your next travel destination (and when are you taking it?)

for those of you with kids....who here always travels with the family....and who travels without the kids...i'm kinda feeling guilty for thinking of a trip without the kiddos.....

Re: where is your next travel destination (and when are you taking it?)

  • We went to Mexico this summer with out C for 5 days and had a blast.

We are hopefully headed skiing right after Christmas with my family.  C will be going as well.

I might be crazy but I never get the guilt for leaving kiddos.  Are we not supposed to have fun on our own once kids are in the picture?

  • I am one of the ones who also travels with the kids, mainly because we don't have a choice. I am not comfortable having my parents watch them for an extended period of time, especially with them both still working and them having college kids and dealing with their "issues"...lol.  At this time I'm okay with having the kids with us.  Once they get older and are much more selfsufficent, I won't feel so guilty asking (my guilt is more for my parents, not so much the kids).

  • i just had a crazy aunt who made me feel guilty...family gotta love them.....but ur post is helping!

I don't think you should feel guilty. I realize that everyone is different and what works for my family might not work for others.  We are lucky that my parents were able to watch C.

I don't think you are a bad parent in the least for going on a trip with out them.  I don't think people are bad parents for taking kids.  We will always do both.

I just never understand the guilt trip that people try to lay on people who do choose to go without kids.

  • We just got back early this morning from a week in Maine with the kiddos.  It was awesome.  We rented a house on a cape with another family, so much fun.

Next week we are taking the kids to California.  5 days in Santa Monica, then a week in Central Ca...

Sept we are taking the kids to Ohio for Dh 25 year high school reunion.   Just a long weekend.

October we are going to Italy KID FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I think, we are going somewhere kid free, just haven't booked it.  However, Italy is the top of our list.

OMG SO JEALOUS!!!!!!! loving all these trips you are taking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We are going with Olivia to Bermuda but its a cruise so we should have sitters on there. I am one of those who doesn't feel guilty I just want to spend as much time as I can with her. She's so much fun and with working and her not sleeping at daycare I don't get much time with her.

We are planning a trip sans baby though soon.

  • We're going for a long weekend at Orange Beach next weekend. Addie and I will go a day early just us for a mommy and daughter day, then another family and DH are meeting us for the next 3 days.

I have a girls weekend (2nd this year, last was to Nashville with just one gf) in the fall.

Next year we are going to Australia with the whole family in June.

Earlier this summer just DH and I went to Mexico at an adults only AI. It was a blast. We usually try to do one long weekend (3-4 days) a year sans kid.

  • We're going to Colorado in two weeks to see my FIL, his wife, and DH's grandmother (with Char) for the weekend.  Grandmother isn't doing just great and she's old, so we want Char to meet her only surviving great-grandparent.

In mid-September we'll be going to Round Rock for a wedding.  Taking Charlotte with us, but dropping her @ the in-laws' in Bastrop for the wedding so we can go as a couple.  Kids weren't invited, and I'm TOTALLY okay with that :)

Hopefully in October, we'll be heading to Disneyland!  Obviously with Char.

  • If DH has his way, we will be in Hong Kong and Bali over Thanksgiving.  If I have my way, we will be in Hawaii.  Both options will include Miss F.

  • That being said, our last two big trips have been without F.  We went to Italy last September and Maldives/London last February.   We have done Florida/Cali/Maryland with F in the last six months.

  • Typically, since DS is so little, I prefer to travel w/o him.  Just b/c I don't feel guilty about it, doesn't mean I don't miss him!  But we are usually on the go, if we are on a "trip" and when we go on "vacation", we want to relax!  lol.  And when we get back, the grandparents tell me what fun they have with him that I can't feel guilty!  He's getting some precious grandparent time.  Since #2 is on her way in a few months, we don't have anything planned in the near future.

When the kids get a little older and are able to remember the places they have been, then I would be more inclined to bring them.  Right now, it's not worth the plane ticket/extra costs, etc.

  • We travel a lot and almost always take our kids but this is mostly because we dont have much choice. We have no family local, so going anywhere without them usually involves a 3rd plane ticket for my mom to come watch them.

This year we went to Western MA for 3 weeks and got a furnished apartment. The boys had a blast and so did we. We hope to take one trip like this every year.

Our next trip will be a long weekend in NOLA for DHs 40th and my mom is coming down to watch the kids.

The next BIG trip is to visit some of our BFFs in Australia. We'll be in Melbourne/Tasmania for 2 weeks. I can't wait! Like MA, this is the kind of trip I look forward to bringing our kids on. This will create memories that will last a lifetime!

In no way at all am I suggesting that you should change what you're doing with your kids (grandparent time is awesome and it breaks my heart that my kids don't get more of it), but I will say from seeing friends of mine with older kids who did this same thing, they tend to have a harder time with their kids when they travel.

At 4 and 2, my kids are already seasoned travelers and know the "rules" for airplanes, cabs, busses, etc... They rarely ask "are we there yet?" type questions and feel comfortable riding/flying for long periods of time. I feel as though "remembering" isn't the only value in travel for kids. For parents who enjoy traveling, having kids who can do so easily is a benefit. Experience is also great for kids. Also, I remember some of the trips that I took at 4-5 years old better than a couple I took in middle/high school!

Again, this isn't necessarily about you, carebear, and what you do for your family. I just thought it was important to share for people who are weighing the pros and cons of whether or not to travel with their own kids.

  • We don't have anything big planned.  I feel like we are traveling non-stop, but all of it involves quick trips for emergencies or family functions.   We are going to a wedding in New Orleans the weekend after Labor Day, and then another wedding in Virginia Beach mid-October.  (that one is actually a long weekend)  My sister wants us up in Minnesota for Thanksgiving.  Then we are going for a week in Cali mid-January for a conference and mini-vacation.

I want to go back to South America, and I would love to tour France soon.

  • December-Scottsdale/Sedona to see inlaws

March-not sure yet but just DH and I for our anniv.

Next summer-somewhere with the boys and DH. Maybe a cruise??

    image
  • Next summer we are either going to San Fran for my cousin's wedding with some days of sight seeing thrown in, or hopefully taking C to Disney and leaving #2 with the grandparents. It all depends on if my kids are invited to the wedding or not. If not, we likely won't go then as all of my family who usually baby-sits for us will be going to the wedding.
  • planning on going to vietnam, hong kong and thailand this december.

the plan is to go to vietnam first with the girls, then they will stay there with my mom while dh and i spend about a week total in hong kong and thailand.

i don't really feel guilty about going on a trip w/o the kiddos, but i feel bad for my mom who is our primary babysitter.  it wasn't bad w/ dd1 bc she was a good sleeper, but dd2 is still not sttn, so even when we have her watch her for a night, i feel bad.  that's why we haven't gone w/o them anywhere.

  • DH and I are going to take a mini-trip, just us, to Pulau Tioman, Malaysia.  Tiny little island with nothing much to do.  Exactly what we want!

After that, we'll fly to Houston for Christmas, then San Francisco for the New Year.

    image
  • I would love to get away for a few days just DH and I, but I don't see that happening anywhere in the next few years. However, that's not stopping us from taking family vacations. This year we are going to Miami in early December, nice 2 hour nonstop flight, so DS should be fine with that.
  • I'm going to NYC in Sept for a girls weekend for my sister's 30 bday! It will be my first trip without the kiddo and I'm looking forward to it!

We're doing our usual holiday traveling to see our families- Dallas for Thanksgiving, El Paso for Christmas.

We're going to Disneyland in March with my parents (my dad has a conference at a WDW resort) and I can't wait!

Hopefully DH and I can take a weekend trip without the kiddo for our anniversary next year.

  • I'm going to Jamaica for work in October, so DH is accompanying me : )  We're at an all-inclusive and I'm soooo excited!  No kids, of course.

In December, we're going to Disneyworld with my sister and her kids... and of course the kids are accompanying us.

  • With my current job situation, we have nothing planned other than a girls trip for me in the fall.

We've tossed around the idea of Disney in the spring, but that seriously depends on money.  And we'll probably take a weekend trip to the Hill Country after the first of the year, just the two of us.  DH has never been out that way.

I enjoy spending time with C, but I also know that we need to spend time as a couple.  I think all couples do, plus there are places we go that I wouldn't take DS - like Napa.

  • Italy in Sept - no kids! It will be our first trip without them.

Girls trip in October - No kids & especially no husbands : )

Short weekend in Austin for the Ironman in October with kids

Possibly FL in December to see inlaws though I kind of doubt it

    Disney World in March!

  • We're going to Disney in December as a family.  Earlier this year took a long week in the Hill Country without the kids and I had a girls weekend in Fredericksburg.

We try to plan two trips a year.  One big vacation and one long weekend.  We alternate which one is kid free.  This year we're doing our big vacation as a family (Disney).  Next year hopefully DH and I will do one longer kid-free vacation and we'll do a family long weekend.

  • So far this year we've done,

Boston in April - just me and the kids to see my brother and nephew

Colorado in May - all of us with my Mom and SD.

Pennsylvania in July - DD went up first alone for a week and then DH and I went up with DS for a long weekend to bring her back home.

Hopefully, that's it for the year.

Next year we hope to do our previously annual trip to Destin - obviously with the kids.  I'm hoping for a trip to NYC with just DH in December too.
